Sony Ericsson G900 Review - Editor's Review

10 Jun 2008
The G900 is included in Sony Ericsson’s G-series which is also made up of its twin, the Sony Ericsson G700. The Sony Ericsson G900 has a solid candybar design that is offered in a dark red-coloured casing for an elegant look, and deep brown colour that creates that contemporary appeal. The Sony Ericsson G900 is slim and compact, but feels solid nonetheless. The G900 measures 13mm x 49mm x 106mm – slim and handy for a 3G-enabled Smartphone.

The Sony Ericsson G900 has a display screen measuring 60.96 millimeters. The TFT touch-sensitive screen displays a maximum of 262,000 colours on high resolution, which can be activated through the user’s finger, the use of a pointer or a stylus for inputting text messages or navigating the user interface. The Sony Ericsson G900 supports SMS, MMS, instant messaging and mobile email services. When users input text messages, the G900’s handwriting recognition system turns handwritten texts into letters from the keypad, as applicable.

Notably, the Sony Ericsson G900 is a standout with its 5-Megapixel camera that captures photos of high quality. With regard to the digital camera, the G900’s display screen functions effectively as a view finder. The Sony Ericsson G900’s camera has an autofocus feature, and allows its users to focus closer to their photo subjects with its 3x digital zoom. For best results under dimmer environments, the mobile phone’s photo light may be used to brighten up the final shot outputs.

Moreover, the G900’s photo-fix system makes adjustments possible with photo contrast and brightness. The Sony Ericsson G900 also boasts of a redeye reduction technology that makes shots better in terms of quality. A stabiliser is also incorporated in the digital camera’s technology to ensure the elimination of hand movements during picture-taking that will otherwise affect the final photos.

The Sony Ericsson G900 is also capable of recording video footages. Similar with the photo light for still shots, the G900 video recorder houses a video light to make dull surroundings bright up. Video playing and streaming are supported by Sony Ericsson G900.

Online browsing is a breeze with the G900’s Opera Web browser and WAP 2.0 in XHTML, which gains users their access to favourite Web sites and online shops directly from the mobile phone. The G900 Internet browser is accessible from the G900’s main menu. The touch screen controls are easy to navigate for users’ optimum surfing experience. The Sony Ericsson G900 also allows RSS feeds, making users updated with current news found in Web sites and a host of blog sites. To do this, users may subscribe to the RSS services for their consumption thereafter – direct from the Sony Ericsson G900 handset.

It has a built-in media player which allows playback of music or video files, and supports all generally accepted video and audio formats. Being an entertainment-focused mobile phone, the Sony Ericsson G900 allows its users to enjoy sound in top quality. Audio quality is enhanced by its Mega Bass feature that allows the bass sound to be adjusted to match the track that is being played. In addition, the media player offers the album art feature that displays the playing or searched track’s album cover.

The Sony Ericsson G900 also comes with TrackID, which has gained popularity because of its brilliant music recognition. There is also a PlayNow feature for quick and easy downloads, which availability may vary depending on user location and area network provider. Ringing tones are embraced by the Sony Ericsson G900 in AAC, polyphonic and MP3 formats.

Completing the gamut of music entertainment features is the Sony Ericsson G900’s FM radio with an RDS support. The RDS allows viewing of information as they are displayed on the touch-sensitive colour screen. The G900 also has a notes option which makes note-taking more convenient than when written on paper with the use of a pen.

The Sony Ericsson G900 works on a Symbian operating system – a commonly utilized OS for Smartphones. The G900 handset also houses features for document reading and editing. It is a triband phone that works on GSM and UMTS 2100 networks. It has a built-in memory of 160 Megabytes, which users may opt to expand using the micro M2 memory stick.

As a 3G-enabled mobile phone, the Sony Ericsson G900 offers Internet connection, video calls and data transfers in high speed. Moreover, the handset is capable of multitasking, where it allows its users to stay-on during calls while at the same time downloading files.

Connecting the Sony Ericsson G900 with other compatible devices is what the Bluetooth wireless technology and the USB cable are all about. Notably, the G900’s Bluetooth can connect with other Bluetooth-enabled units of up to 10 meters. Perhaps the most notable feature of the Sony Ericsson G900 is its WLAN Wi-Fi technology for Internet connection that is made possible via wireless hotspots.
