Nokia N78 Review - Editor's Review

4 Jun 2008
The Nokia N78 adds to Nokia's top-of-the-line NSeries, which consists of the Nokia N77, Nokia N70, Nokia N73 and the Nokia N76.

Style and fashion – these are the Nokia N78's most striking and basic features. The 3G-enabled Smartphone is housed in a sleek casing, on which users may opt for its brown, white and sleek black casing colours. While the actual handset signifies a candy bar that comes with rounded and smooth edges and highlighted by its tactile finish, the Nokia N78's keys reflect a design that signifies the contemporary bar type, thus creating a small and compact layout.

The Nokia N78 has a QVGA screen that measures 60.96 millimeters and offers clear viewing with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The phone displays a lively gamut of 16,000,000 colours. Overall, the Nokia N78 is relatively solid, with a height of 15.1mm x 49mm x 113mm, making the Smartphone a trouble-free device in terms of the user carrying and holding it.

Internally, the mobile phone has a memory of 70 Megabytes that may be expanded through the MicroSD memory card. Similar to mobile phones of later handset models, the Nokia N78 supports SMS and MMS messaging.

The Nokia N78 operates under 3G HSDPA which means faster transfer, downloads and connectivity. Its built-in 3G support allows its user to make video calls through a second camera situated on the mobile phone’s front area. The N78 also allows wireless communication through Wi-Fi and UPnP support. Because of the mobile phone’s Bluetooth technology, A2DP wireless connectivity is also its key strength. The phone also has an EDGE technology, permitting faster transfer rates that are estimated to be thrice the speed of transfers made via GRPS.

The quadband Nokia N78’s coverage includes WCDMA and GSM networks. It works on a Symbian OS that Nokia installed with the third edition S60 software. Because of the mobile phone’s built-in 3G technology, the Nokia N78 allows viewing of documents and files in Microsoft Office formats. A highlight of the Nokia N78 is its A-GPS system that provides directions and supports Nokia’s maps.

The mobile phone’s imaging features flaunt not only their appeal to users, but are also popular for being user-friendly. For one, the Nokia N78 has a built-in 3.2-Megapixel camera with the standard options, features options and settings that are expected to most of Nokia’s NSeries units.

The camera is expected to perform in its optimum as Carl Zeiss optics and Tessar lens are integrated on it, thereby ensuring focused and clear shots. The Nokia N78 user may opt to change the settings of the camera when capturing photos, simply by tweaking the settings relating to close-ups, landscape and night portrait, among other options. Similarly, the photo’s tone and white colour balance are easily adjustable. The Nokia N78’s digital camera features an autofocus, 20x zoom, auto exposure and flash function.

A phone camera seems incomplete without a built-in video camera to couple it with. The Nokia N78 user is able to enjoy recording and playback of videos. Performance-wise, the N78’ video recorder has an 8x digital zoom. There is also a built-in stabiliser for the video, which serves its very purpose by preventing jumpy and wobbly video footages. Besides the digital camera and the modern video, the Nokia N78 supports viewing of RealPlayer videos in Flash 3, H264, H263 and MPEG4 video formats.

Seemingly created without compromising the entertainment aspect, the Nokia N78 houses a stereo FM radio to the delight of many users. Moreover, the handset supports the VisualRadio feature, which makes possible the viewing of text information that radio stations provide. The Nokia N78 also supports almost all types of music and audio formats. This integrated player allows creation of playlists and displays multi-coulored album art.

The Nokia N78 boasts of its advanced mobile phone technology, mainly dangling its built-in browser that comes with a mini map. The Nokia has a browser feature that provides users with Internet access direct from the mobile phone. As part of its Internet access capability, the Nokia N78 is compatible with computer email services and their attachments. According to most users (who are on-the-go professionals), the email capability of the device translates to user convenience. The Nokia N78 user does not need to cut communication with their offices; instead, all work-related data from and to the office may simply be forwarded or received through the mobile phone.
