Nokia 6555 Review - Editor's Review

5 Jun 2008
The Nokia 6555 folding handset's stylish and sleek, yet unconventional mobile phone design makes it a must-own. A slender and tall handset, the Nokia 6555 measures 99.56mm x 44.20mm x 19.81mm and weighs 97 grams inclusive of its battery - comfortable enough to be hand-held. Similar with the Motorola V3 RAZR, the Nokia 6555 has an antenna that is situated at the phone's lower part. The Nokia 6555 is offered in red, silver, black, and brown colour versions.

Externally, the Nokia 6555 measures 31.75 mm with a 128 x 160-pixel display that supports 262,000 vibrant colours. It has an internal display that measures 50.80 millimeters at 320 x 240 pixels. The phone fully supports 16,000,000 vibrant colours. This feature makes graphics, animations and photos look clear and crisp, and may be customised in terms of themes, alert sounds and animations. The mobile phone also has an array of wallpapers that users can choose from. Its phone book allows its user to store 1,000 contacts. Notably, the handset also flaunts its analogue timepiece on display.

The Nokia 6555's large navigation controls translate to optimum user convenience. The mobile phone houses a tactile toggle that allows navigating through its interface a breeze experience. Its text may be changed in terms of font color and size.

The Nokia 6555 is known for the emphasis it places on its music features, in an effort to be at par with the Motorola Razr series. Design-wise, the Nokia N6555's music player is of the minimalist touch. Its music player allows playing of audio tracks in WMA, MP3, eAAC+ and AAC formats. It houses the usual features such as an equalizer, repeat and flight modes, playlist creation, album art and stereo widening.

The Nokia 6555's ringtones may come in video, polyphonic, MIDI, MP3, MIDI, eACC+, AAC, AMR, MP3 ringing tones that the user can download. The Nokia 6555 also has pre-installed games that include Rally 3D, Golf Tour, Soccer 3D and Sudoku. This phone’s attribute guarantees full user entertainment. The availability of these games, however, varies by UK region.

The Nokia N6555 has a camera with 1.3 megapixels in digital zoom that takes shots in five resolutions and offers editing options such as colour effects, night mode, white-balance setting and self-timer, among others. The 6555 also has a camcorder that supports easy-to-use video streaming, recording and playback features.

The N6555's built-in memory is capped at 30 Megabytes, which may be expanded through a microSD memory card that may come in as much as 4 Gigabytes. As it is a quadband mobile phone in GSMs 850, 900, 1800 and 1900, it supports worldwide roaming, with usability that fits the lifetsyle of its on-the-go users. Its battery life lasts for six hours worth of talk time and almost ten days of standby time. An FCC radiation test puts the Nokia 6555 at a 1.25 watts/kilogram of SAR rating.

The mobile phone's messaging services consist of text messages, multimedia messaging and emails. It also has speakerphones for voice calls. The Nokia 6555's e-mail capability supports document attachments in generally popular formats. The Word Wide Web may be accessed using the mobile phone's built-in WAP 2.0 Internet browser in XHTML. Being a 3G phone, the Nokia 6555 enables faster music Internet downloads, and high-speed online browsing and video streaming. Connection with compatible devices is possible either through the Nokia 6555's Bluetooth technology, USB port or 2.5-millimeter audio jack. The handset supports Java applications that may be purchased from Nokia's Software Market.

On the downside, some users have lamented that the Nokia 6555 disappoints in terms of picture quality and colors. The colors are visually natural; however, the images are rather dim, where lines and splotches are visible. Moreover, the handset's speakerphone has low volume than expected, they say.

Another complaint by users is that the Nokia 6555's placement of its microSD slot is inconveniently stashed underneath the battery cover; hence, it is difficult to insert the memory card without turning first the mobile phone off and taking the battery out.

While the mobile phone's keypads are brightly backlighted, some users have found that the numbers on these keypads are too tiny. The keypads also lack a clear key, some others have point out.

Nokia 6555 Review - User Reviews

Reviewer: Jackie - Canada
Reviewed on: 19th June, 2008
Rating: 3/10
I've had the Nokia 6555 since April 2008. It has been turning off on its own which beats the whole concept of having a mobile phone. And there are times that I can't even send text messages on the phone cause it turns off on its own. And whenever I am talking to someone it also turns off on its own. Plus, I can't even play the video clips that I took. I could only hear the sound and at times I press the play button and it crashes. Since it is under warranty, I asked the phone company to do something about it. They replaced it with the same unit and after a couple of weeks it has the same problem again except it can play the videos and it does not crash. And I really agree with the other reviews, the picture quality is not so good and the camera resolution is too low for a phone that is supposed to be high-end.
