Nokia 5200 Review - Editor's Review

30 May 2008
Nokia has provided the world with top class phones and is the top innovator of mobile technology. Their collections of mobile phones are probably one of the most popular in the globe. From monochrome cellular phones to the top colored phones of today, the they have created single hand phones to flip phones, and then came the sliding phone, Nokia 5200.

Announced in September 2006, the Nokia 5200 is considered as a low-end version of its twin, the more featured 5300. Despite this, however, it is still a phone perfect or those who are working on a tight budget but are looking for features more than texting and calling.

It has a dimension of 92.4 mm by 48.2 mm 20.7 mm and weighs about 104 grams. That means that the phone is small enough to fit any pocket but not too small to be misplaced. It is a Color Super Twist Nematic or a CSTN phone, which could display 256K of colors. The screen can be a bit dark when exposed under direct sunlight or poor lighting conditions, which has always been a problem with older model of Nokia phones. The good thing about this model is that it is built specifically to for MP3 play back, hence the controls found on the sides of the phone. Most users also say that the sound of the phone is amazing, both with or without the headset. It also has built in polyphonic tunes for your message or calls alerts or to further customize it, you can transfer your favorite MP3s on the phone with its microSD expandable memory up to 2 GB. The phone however sees only 1.3GB because of the system files it stores on the memory card, and could hang up if you put too much.

Unlike its predecessors, the Nokia 5200 was built for easy sharing of audio and video files with its Bluetooth and infrared port, not to mention its GPRS capability. With its USB connectivity, the phone can also be used as a modem especially with its built-in High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) or its EDGE capability categorized at class 10, internet connection speed can be as fast as 236.8 kbps.

Of course, like any mobile phone, the Nokia 5200 could send and receive messages via short message service, commonly known as the SMS, multimedia messaging service or you might know as the MMS and with its internet connectivity, you can even send and receive instant messages through Yahoo and MSN! It has a built in VGA camera and could take pictures at 640 by 840 pixels, but a lot of phone users complain of the quality of images is really poor. It can also record videos, which can last up to 1 hour, depending on the memory you’re using. It has an FM radio, which had excellent reception, but you will need to have your headset handy in order to utilize this feature. Truly, the Nokia 5200 is more than just a simple phone.

A lot of phone users think that the Nokia 5200 is a good phone for personal and business use. Its media player provides entertainment for those long wait in line. Its Internet connectivity is also helpful for business people who need to check their emails as soon as possible. With easier file transfer, you can now change your audio files without hassle, depending on your mood. You can also get free downloadable games from the internet and transfer it to your phone for added entertainment. Unfortunately, you will need to have your headset with you at all times if you’d rather listen to the radio.

Despite the many features of the Nokia 5200, it also has its flaws. Of course, its features, though excellent, are still incomparable with the modern phones that we have today. Its VGA camera has poor image quality, and perhaps its biggest disadvantage is its short battery life. Its battery lasts only 3 hours and 10 minutes in talk time and 263 hours in standby time and even shorter if you text and play MP3s at the same time.

In conclusion, the Nokia 5200 is a good phone for those who are looking for more than the basic features but don’t have much of a budget to purchase high-end models. It is a good entertainment gadget and its built-in calendar and reminders list helps users organize their day. It is a small, affordable phone that is perfect for mid-class consumers.

the Nokia 5200 is quite a good phone though the design of it looks quite like plastic but the phone is easy to use with quite a nice sharp camara image and can store lots of songs and play the songs with a quality sound. If you are in a dark room though the pictures show up really dark which can be a problem even if tou change the lighing setting, but this also happens to a few other phones so you dont need to worry. Any way the price of this phone is good but i would not reccommend it to anyone wanting a higher class phone.
