Motorola W220 Review - Editor's Review

3 Jun 2008
Motorola phones have always looked great but with the release of the Motorola W220, they have proven again why they have been in mobile phone manufacturing business for the longest time.

Announced in February 2006, the Motorola W220 is still available in the market and is much preferred by fashion-conscious teens and people who are looking for an attractive phone which doesn’t have a price tag to match. The phone work in countries using the GSM 900/1800 bandwidth but it also has a GSM 850/1900 version which works in the United States. The phone is quite small at 95 mm by 46 mm by 16.7 mm which makes up a total of 74 cubic centimeters and making the phone really slim and it just weighs 93 grams. Motorola W220 is that slim that you wouldn’t even realize you have a mobile phone in your pocket or that it is hanging on your neck.

The Motorola W220 could display CSTN (Color Super-Twist Nematic) which displays 65K of colors. Its screen could show 128 by 128 pixels or 28 mm by 28 mm of a picture or a screensaver. Not too bad for a 2G phone. By the way, this phone could allow you to download wallpapers and screensavers. It is a polyphonic phone with 32 channels and even though it does not have an MP3 player, it has an FM radio to boot.

You could also utilize this phone to compose your own ringing tone or you could download music from the internet or through the Motorola website. Even though the Motorola W220 does not have any memory card slot, it has a 500 KB user memory and it could handle up to 600 phonebook entries, 10 dialed numbers, 10 missed calls and 10 received calls in its call records. It could receive and store 250 messages in its internal memory. Alerts are customizable or you can put the phone on silent mode and watch for the lights in front to know if you have a message or that someone is calling you.

Unfortunately, data transfer and sharing with the Motorola W220 is really difficult as it doesn’t have an infrared port or Bluetooth capability. You can connect it through USB but since the phone doesn’t come with a USB cable, you will have to search for a compatible one. Good thing it has class 8 GPRS capability with 32 to 40 kbps and a WAP 2.0/xHTML compatible browser.

The Motorola W220 is not a technologically advanced phone but it sure has great features. Sure it sends and receives short messages without any problems, but it can also create MMS and it has push mail retrieval, which is really great for a phone this affordable. It also has a T9 text input for faster texting.

The phone has several games such as Football, Rebels, and Crazy which are really cool but unfortunately, you can no longer add more to this collection as there are so few applications available for this phone model.

Organizing is made easier with its calendar. Add to this the calculator, for a quick computation and a currency converter for when you go to another country to visit or a business trip.

The best feature of the Motorola W220 is not its sleek rubberized finish, but rather, its battery which lasts up to 290 hours in stand-by and up to 8 hours in talk time. Now you won’t have to bring your charger when you make that short trip to grandma because the phone can last up to 5 days without charging! With a headset connected, you can listen to the radio silently, or you can have it in speaker mode and you will still hear that fine, crisp sound that Motorola is known for.

Motorola W220 is a great phone, and affordable too, for the power that comes with it. Perhaps its biggest disadvantages its small screen and the difficulty in data sharing. Some users complain that it doesn’t have an integrated camera but that is the very reason why this phone is cheap – it doesn’t come with unnecessary features that a normal phone shouldn’t have. It is light and thin, and very functional for a phone this size. It allows you to call, text, MMS and send and receive emails. It allows you to connect to the internet through its GPRS. It is durable and friendly to the touch; some people claim that it is also waterproof. If you need more than that, then this phone is definitely not for you.
