LG KG290 Review - Editor's Review

30 May 2008
After years and years of leading the world with their high-class home equipments, now the South Korean based company, LG, has started to share the world their newly developed mobile phones. Among these phones is the LG KG290. Well, before we break down the specifications and wonders of this mobile phone, let’s view it in general. The LG KG290 is a 2G network phone with a GSM 900/ 1800/ 1900. The phone was first announced in September 2007 and was released in February 2008.

The LG KG290 has dimensions of 92mm by 46 mm by 17.7 mm and it weighs only at 90 grams. It is a TFT (Thin filmed transistor) phone, which displays 236k colours. It could also display 128 by 160 pixels, which is only about 1.77 inches with its wallpapers that are downloadable. It is a polyphonic phone with 40 channels and it could store in and play MP3 music. It also has a photocall system where you could just look for the picture of the person you would want to call and it could store 40 missed calls, 40 received calls and 40 dialed numbers in its call records. It also has a memory card slot for microSD or TransFlash and a shared memory of 5 MB. The LG KG290 could transfer or store in data via GPRS class 10 with speed 32 to 48 kbps. Data sharing is also more convenient with its USB connector, and Bluetooth capability.

The LG KG290 is quite one typical phone that could be utilized by both teens and adults alike. It has features that might be loved by both age groups. The LG KG290 has the capability to send and receive short messages and with the use of its MMS or multimedia messages, you could send or receive cute photos, songs, videos or even designed messages. It also has games, which you would and could download from the Internet or from the LG KG290 system. The mobile phone comes in two colors, black or gray, which could match absolutely any color, any occasion and it is even very elegant and exquisite to the eyes. It has a camera, which brings out 1.3-mega pixels or 1280 by 960 pixels, which produces mid-quality images. Its digital camera could also be used in video recording. You could download various pictures, wallpapers, songs and games in the easiest and quickest way with its Java MIDP version 2.0. Besides an MP3 player, it also has a WMA and an AAC++ player and when you ever get tired of listening to the same songs, you could have the chance to know what’s new in the music world with its FM radio.

The LG KG290 has a calculator for an effortless computation wherever and whenever. Also, with its organizer, and voice memo, jotting notes is no longer as cumbersome as before. If ever you were traveling from one place to another or if you have relatives or friends in other countries, keeping track of the differences in time zones is so much easier with the LG KG290’s world time. Top that with a built-in hands free feature and you have a mobile phone built for entertainment and business.

But, LG KG290 is no perfect gadget. Its biggest downfall is its short battery life. For a high-powered phone, having 2 hours of talk time battery life is lacking as this limits your phone usage. What good is a mobile phone-MP3 player-video/digicam if it shuts down after a couple of hours? You will need to bring the charger at all times so you could make full use of its features. This means that this isn’t the phone you’re going to bring when you go travel.

Generally speaking, the LG KG290 is such a cool and stylish phone that suits any age groups. It has the specification a lot of advanced phones nowadays have and it could actually be a match to these other mobile phones that roam the world. However, with its battery life, it just appears to be one ordinary mobile phone with a few additional features.

This phone was advertised for 100 euro, but I payed a 89 euro. Still not a bargain when I read the comments. You can't find a single Tesco store in the Netherlands.

I bought this phone a month ago and so far I think its great. The camera is pretty basic, the mp3 is great when I finally worked out how to put music in the sd card ( which I bought with a card reader for about £12) and the radio is very good. I dont play games or have tried to download any so thats not been an issue. All in all I have found it very good value for money. Judging by the look of most of the phones on the market I expect they would all break if dropped !

I bought this phone in January and at the start it was brilliant, it had a good camera and I bought a micro SD card for extra memory and used it as an MP3 player it was fab. But I can not download any games on to it. But now only 5 months later it was totally ruined. Me and my mum both dropped them on the same day. We didnt drop them from very high (it was an accident) and now the screen is totally wrecked. M screen has all been messed up apart from one corner where you can still see the display, on my mums the whole image has seemingly moved up the screen so there is about a centimeter line of what should be at the bottom of the screen righ6 at the top. They are both now totally useless and worthless. We were gutted. I would advise you not to buy the LG KG290 as it breaks far too easily.

I got this phone a day ago for $105. At first I thought it was good but I thought wrong. The volume of the phone is so low you can barely hear the person you're talking to. Also there are a lot of dropped calls. Don't even waste your money buying this phone.

Bought the LG KG290 from Tesco direct on special offer for £19.98. Found there was no USB cable so I called to complain, they said it wasn't advertised as beng included but I pointed out that as the instruction manual told you how to use it (without saying cable NOT included) then it should be there. I had £5 credited to my card by way of compensation so the phone ended up costing me £14.98 and as £10 of that was air time the phone itself cost £4.98. No complaints from me.

jusy got 2 x lg kg290's for £20 each with £10 top in each from tesco.com, traded in 2 x se k300i for £5 each, so i got a bargain here, as stated before 5mb internal mem is not anywhere near enough, so got myself 2 x 2gb sd micro cards with reader for £16 delivered, should do the trick, if u paid over £80 u might get a better phone but just not worth it,otherwise cannot fault the phone in any way.

Why is everyone giving up? Here is what you can do:

1. Buy a SD card reader to fit in your USB port of computer. Better to buy one with a micro SD adaptor to fit into it OR just buy a SD card reader that comes with multiple ports. Search Sandisk ones on internet.

2. Buy Micro SD card to put in your phone, maximum of 2GB (external memory port next to your SIM card).

3. Format your card in your phone, you should see a folder called External Memory with Image, Video, Sound and Other folders.

4. Hook up your SD reader and micro SD card together to see it on your computer screen. You can drag photos into the Images folder, MP3s into the Sounds folder, and WMA files into Others - like CD tracks for example.

5. Put the Micro SD back in your phone and it everything is there. Transfering using the USB reader instead of a USB cable might be annoying but you'll get used to it!

The cheapest and quickest way to transfer any music or files to your LG KG290 .. is without cable or bluetooth .. is buy an SD card reader from tesco's ... made by '' techno '' priced £ 2.49 .. works with vista and XP .. ( YOU ALSO NEED ) the SD Micro card adapter will cost £ 2 on e bay ... so for less than a Fiver you have a very versatile cable free way of file transfer .. its the quickest way to transfer music or files to your external memory Micro SD card ( OR from mobile to PC ).. the cost of a Micro SD card ( 1 GB ) £ 3.00 ( 2 GB ) £ 6.00 on E bay ... the PC with recognise the ( Card reader ) as removeable disc ... just drag and drop your Mp3's or files to your removeable disc .. then just insert the SD card back into your mobile when all done .. A ( 1 GB ) card will hold on average 20 hours of music ... A ( 2 GB ) card will hold on average 40 hours of music .. i hope this helps anyone with the LG KG290 who has very little money like myself so this i have found the cheapest way to suit my pocket..

I just got this phone from tescos and seeing that Lg phones are usually good i thought i'd get it. i was amazed at first glance then things got worse and worse, this phone does NOT support java games, and if you want to add multi-media to the kg290 you WILL need a usb cable, not a blutooth adapter, its a nice phone once you get all the things you need for it, you just have to make sure your willing to spend around 40 pounds althogether for this phone. i hope this review helps.

I bought a USB cable and a memory card from ebay for the phone which cost me about £12. Both work perfectly although I did initially have problems with the phone recognising MP3 files on the external memory until I discovered that my computer had put them into a music file on the memory which the phone doesn't recognise. This was easily fixed by dragging and dropping the music file into the sounds file. I am now really pleased with the phone and it is still a bargain at £38 in total.

ok. i get your point .its cheap so why should you expect anything???
ILL TELL YOU WHY!!!!!. Im pretty broke. my duaghter wanted an mp3 player and a phone. yes i bought mine from tesco too for £26.
WHAT A PIECE OF ??? AND HOW DOES TESCO+LG GET AWAY WITH THIS???
. it would be fine if it came with a memory that matched that of a standard mp3 player these days. rather than the built in memory of the exivilant to an old game boy game. not even 1/10th of a MB (megabite). look this is stupid , i know that you can buy a memory card for a tenner but that defeats the object of buying a cheap phone does it not? if your on a budget you dont want to splash out on a bloody memory card and then find out ..hey wait a minuite!!!! now i need a fucking usb cable as well (not suplied). thanks tesco..... and LG (LIFES GOOD) or otherwise no as ps( phones ??? ) .
SO LETS ADD IT ALL UP RITE the memory card £10 the cable £15 the phone £26 total of £51 oh and the frustration . time and travelling to get these items probably £5 to £10 pounds. so that £55 to £61 your actually paying for this product thatll have you tearing your hair out.
If youve already bought this phone TAKE IT BACK if you havnt yet then you have been warned
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Oh dear - what terrible reviews. I have just bought this phone and I think it is great. I would make just one point with everyone moaning about downloading onto it and no USB cable - I paid £26.22 for my phone, I bought it for it's similarity to the LG Chocolate and for £26.22 and I am not that bothered about using it as a sophisticated piece of equipment. I just want a phone with slide action, good looks, and fun to use. I can get ringtones, wallpaper etc., from Bluetooth. For all you people who wish to download music tracks etc., why not buy a more expensive phone. I mean, come on, for £26.22 what do you eepect. (£26.22 introductory price - will be £34.97 - still cheap!

The 2GB Micro SD is what you need if you want to put music on your phone, you can put MP3 or WMA files onto it from your PC. Forget bluetooth and USB cables!!! This Sandisk micro with Mini and SD adapters worked PERFECTLY for me, for a bargain at £7.99.

Buy any micro or standard SD usb reader. If you buy the Sandish one with adapters you can just get the normal SD reader. Format the Micro SD in your phone then put it into the SD adapter, then SD adaptor in the SD usb reader into your PC. Transfer MP3s into the Sounds folder and WMA files in Other folder. Then put the Micro SD back in your phone. This phone isn't bad!!! Everyone stop complaining! Sure it's a cheap phone because of 5MB internal memory and lack of software + cable, but if you spend an extra £10 on the right external memory and SD USB reader you won't whinge one bit. Do something about it!!!

kewl fone, sleek and sexy but..
I noticed that like others below there was no USB cable supplied and its IMPOSSIBLE to get one, also Bluetoothing MP3s to this fone is also quite impossible as the onboard memory is way too low and the fone does not see the secondary memory (SD Card) for you to download strait to it.. but i do download mp3s but they have to be from cell on line sites and they have to be shrunk to a smaller file.. i think the main problem is just the allocation of the primary memory.. And with regards to the bluetooth, my PC will see my Cellie, but my Cellie wont see my PC.. so uploading pics ect is also somewhat impossible.. but heck, overall, i still like it..

Be aware that getting the MP3 player to play your own cd's will cost you a fair bit. A 2GB micro SD memory card, USB cable (if you can find one - try CRC Communicaid-as per recent post from Terry), and software to convert CD tracks to MP3 (smartCDripper is easy to use) cost almost as much as the phone! Having said that, once you get it up and running, the quality is pretty good. Overall, pleased with the phone so far.
