LG KF700 - Editor's Review
The LG KF700 is another great mobile phone from LG released in the first quarter of 2008. It has three input methods, a full iPhone style touchscreen, a standard alpha-numeric keypad and a shortcut dial wheel. The LG KF700 is a great contender in the smartphone market.
At 102mm length by 51mm in width this is a comfortably sized handset and 15mm thickness is impressive considering the fact that it is a slider phone with a 3 inch touchscreen. The screen doesn't quite go to the edges of the handset but it covers almost all of the front of the phone. Slide the handset open and you are presented with a standard alpha numeric keypad. On the right hand side is a camera shutter button. On the left hand side is the access to the shortcut dial wheel and a select button below it.
The touchscreen element makes the LG KF700 resemble the LG Prada and we are equally impressed by this touchscreen experience. The menus are easy to navigate and you can scroll down menus or through lists of photos just by sweeping your finger across the screen. There is also a slight vibration feedback that you might want to turn on so you can feel when the phone has recognised an input on the touch screen. As we mentioned for the LG KF510, we like the mixture of touch screen and normal keypad as for keen texters a keypad is generally still preferable. By including a full size touch screen LG have simply taken this concept to the next level. The shortcut dial can only be used if you first press the select button below it. You can then turn the dial to scroll through 6 menu items that you can customise to the menu items you use most frequently. You then have to press that select button to go to that shortcut. The idea of the shortcut dial is better than the actual experience. It could have been made so much better by having the select button on the dial itself or by allowing you to select a shortcut on the touchscreen after scrolling with the dial.
We were surprised that the LG KF700 has an integrated 3 megapixel camera rather than the 5.1 megapixel camera like the LG KU990 Viewty. That said, the performance of the camera is still impressive thanks to the decent autofocus and powerful software that LG provide for taking photos. This maybe still isn't a camera for taking all your holiday pictures, but it is still good for a camera phone and is far better than that of the iPhone. There is an adequate LED flash and when recording video there is a stabiliser feature to reduce any element of shaking. The photo browser is a real pleasure to use with touch screen browsing and zooming in and out. There is also a second camera on the front for video calling if you so desire.
The LG KF700 has a pretty powerful media player alongside all the other handsets for 2008, and with the touch screen it is much easier to find the music you want. This is particularly important as the KF700 takes Micro SD High Capacity (SDHC) cards that are available in sizes up to 8GB for less than £30. Compare that to the cost of the iPhone and other high capacity touch screen MP3 and media players, and the LG KF700 looks pretty reasonable. It also has an FM radio and can play MP3 files as ringtones.
Internet browsing on the LG KF700 is pretty easy and fast as would be expected from looking at other touch screen mobile phones from LG. The KF700 has HSDPA meaning that you can connect at up to 7.2 Mbps depending on the network. The browser is functional and fast to use, and the screen makes it comfortable to read large portions of text when compared with smartphones like the Nokia N95. The LG KF700 is triband allowing for use in most countries. Of course it has USB (with an included cable) and Bluetooth connectivity and a pretty standard but comprehensive set of organiser features including a decent calendar. The battery life quoted is a disappointing 3 hours of talktime or a slightly better 340 hours on standby but if you use it as a personal organiser and web browser it will need a daily charge.
The LG KF700 is similar to the Viewty in that it lacks the GPS and Wi-Fi features that the Nokia N95 and other new smartphones offer, and it's 3 megapixel camera may not be good enough for everyone. However, we found the KF700 to be a deliht to use, a fun and powerful mobile phone that should satisfy most people who are happy with the size of the unit and the concept of having a touch screen.
