Blackberry 8800 Review - Editor's Review

By standard, the Blackberry 8800 handset weighs around 134 grams, fitted battery included. It sports a QWERTY keyboard, a trackball control for navigation and access keys, including end, mute and send keys. Its colourful screen at 2.4 inches wide is definitely a plus, guaranteeing perfect viewing for users through a light-sensing screen. The said screen automatically adjusts levels of lighting for clearer display. It is deemed to be at its best viewing under bright conditions.

The Blackberry 8800 also includes the standard phone book, task list, organiser, memo pad and calendar. It supports Personal Information Management or the PIM software.

In addition, the Blackberry 8800 has a built-in media player for music and video that supports all standard and popular formats, propping up entertainment and pleasure. The mobile phone accepts ringing tones with AAC, WMA, MP3, MIDI and polyphonic audio formats, as well as WMV and MPEG-4 video files. The device, however, does not support DRM.

Like most up-to-date and sleek mobile phones, text and multimedia messaging is a breeze with Blackberry 8800. The mobile phone comes with a hands-free speaker facility. It can be used for conference calls, users have attested. The device also comes with the “Push to Talk” service at an easy set-up. Users, however, may opt to switch from the “Push to Talk” application to a regular voice call.

The Blackberry 8800, a quad-band network phone, allows international roaming for users, across Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. The mobile phone can readily connect to a compatible computer, laptop, speaker, printer, and headset through a jack, a USB connection or a Bluetooth technology. Data transfer and downloading of text and images between devices are more efficient and speedier because Blackberry 8800 supports Cingular’s EDGE Technology.

Full mobile Internet browsing with the Blackberry 8800 is one of the smartphone’s most talked-about features. With a built-in and expandable flash memory of 64 Megabytes, you will appreciate its stable and fast performance.

The mobile phone is supported by a security system that provides the user password protection. It locks and deactivates the handset’s keys when the device is inside the pocket or bag. The Blackberry 8800’s battery is of high capacity, providing users with 5-hour maximum talk time. Its standby battery time is roughly 528 hours. The back slot of the mobile phone right underneath the cover of its battery, houses a microSD Card, which is accessible minus the hassle of taking the battery out.

Still, some users prefer bigger spacing between Blackberry 8800’s keys. Mostly, dissatisfied owners find the mobile phone’s layout to be somewhat cramped. According to several users, a noticeable downside is its fuzzy audio quality during voice calls. Viewing photos may not be a problem, but Blackberry 8800 does not have a camera, the lack of which is deemed to be a security measure for most IT buyers.

Alongside its sleek and modern design, the BlackBerry 8800 flaunts its web browsing capacity, instant messaging capability and email service, and GPS navigation system. Traveling users can check their emails using the BlackBerry Internet Service that allows easy set up of up to ten corporate and personal e-mail accounts.

It supports major document file formats, complete with documents attached. The technology behind Blackberry 8800 supports Excel, Word, PDF and JPEG formats, although editing these Microsoft Office documents is only possible only through the aid of third-party software.

Moreover, the Blackberry 8800’s instant messaging capability makes online chat possible with contacts that have, and are using an online IM service. The conversations are tantamount to PC-to-PC chat using symbols and text, depending on the parties’ compatibility with respect to the IM system.

The Blackberry 8800 device is comparable to a typical computer for its capabilities, but the best thing about it is that it fits in your jacket or coat pocket. Talk about handiness!

Another exceptional feature of the BlackBerry 8800 is its enhanced built-in GPS navigation system, which provides users with access to locations, with the aid of the BlackBerry Map application. Through the GPS, users are provided with a user-friendly route finder through the Blackberry Map information and Biz Finder system. Directions are given by a pre-recorded voice.

Most users rate the BlackBerry 8800 as an excellent phone for its superb features. Surprisingly, the satisfied users find it to be a good navigator. With minor flaws yet usefully advanced highlights, it’s worth buying, they say.
