MDA MAIL
I bought this because I wanted a device with camera and MP3 capability, and the BlackBerry I had then didn't have those options. I wanted a BlackBerry Curve, and was very disappointed that T-Mobile didn't offer this - the MDA Mail was definitely a second choice.
The MDA Mail has its good points; the speakerphone is useful (I have mild RSI and holding a phone for long periods is a hazard), the synchronisation is so far trouble-free, web browsing is straightforward.
Handling of attachments is much better than the BlackBerry (but then, it's all Microsoft, so if that didn't work seamlessly, the engineers really ought to be shot). And it's cheaper to run, without the £10 per month BlackBerry data charge.
But its bad points are persistent irritants. The JOGGR facility is a poor substitute for the BlackBerry scrolling wheel, and so subject to accidental touches that send the user to a completely different utility, that I've now left it switched off. Navigation between utilities is more of a pain than it was on the BlackBerry. You can't set it to poll for mail any more frequently than every 15 minutes. Frequent surfing of the net (I have Web'n'walk) reduces the battery life to well under a working day, which is unacceptable.
But the greatest inconvenience is the MDA Mail's annoying habit of taking up to a quarter of an hour to retrieve its connection to GPRS signal after it's been disconnected from my PC after synchronisation or re-charging. It's incredibly frustrating to be waiting and waiting for that signal to re-appear, and I really can't believe it was allowed out of the lab with such a glaring weakness.
I wish, wish, wish, that T-Mobile sold the BlackBerry Curve; I'd have taken one without question. The MDA Mail is, and will always be, a poor substitute.
