Sony Ericsson Z320i Editor's Review
9 Jan 2009
The Sony Ericsson Z320i is a communication device with a simple look, but is embedded with substantial internal features. Its casing is available in crimson red and Atlantic blue colours for users to choose from. It measures 87 x 47 x 20 millimetres, which makes it a convenient handheld device. The Sony Ericsson Z320i has a total weight of 90 grams, which, by standards, is a compact mobile phone given its integrated features.
To vibrantly display picture wallpapers, the Sony Ericsson Z320i has an internal STN screen that supports 65,000 colours over a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. It also offers an external icon screen that displays images over a 96 x 64-pixel resolution.
As a clamshell type of stylish handset, the Sony Ericsson Z320i allows its user to conveniently view information externally even when it is closed through an icon display. When set on silent mode, the handset's external icons light up to alert users of new messages or phone calls.
On the outside, the Z320i resembles the retro look of other clamshell handset creations by Sony Ericsson, including the Sony Ericsson Z310i and the Sony Ericsson Z250i. The Z320i stands out, however, because it offers users the option to enhance the look of the mobile phone to suit their preferences. Altering the mobile phone's overall appearance can be done by altering the handset's Style Up covers feature. Similarly, the handset supports MP3, AAC and polyphonic tones for users to select from, depending on their taste or style.
Working on triband handset technology, the Sony Ericsson Z320i covers GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900 networks. While the mobile phone is well-suited for worldwide roaming purposes, its network coverage capability practically depends its user's network provider.
As its key specifications and features, the Sony Ericsson Z320i comes with built-in Internet browsers in WAP 2.0 XHTML and WAP 1.2.1 versions, which provide users with easy and instant access to the Web straight from their mobile phone at any time and place. Users of the Sony Ericsson Z320i may also opt to connect to other compatible devices such as a printer, a computer or a laptop through USB cable connection or an infrared system.
The Sony Ericsson Z320i provides the messaging services that are usually offered by most, if not all mobile phones. These include SMS or text messaging which supports SMS Long and Predictive Text systems, as well as MMS or multimedia messaging for sharing of files.
As a portable business assistant, the Sony Ericsson Z320i offers features to allow its owner to set schedules and tasks efficiently. The handset comes with organiser features which consist of a phone book, an alarm clock, a stopwatch, a timer, a calculator, a calendar, a vibration option, a sound recorder, as well as notes and tasks. The Sony Ericsson Z320i also comes with a speakerphone complete with hands-free solution, which does away with the need to hold the handset when making or taking calls.
On the entertainment facet, the Sony Ericsson Z320i's banner feature is its built-in 1.3-Megapixel camera. As a quality photo capturing device, the mobile phone's integrated camera has a 4x digital zoom for fuller and more precise shots. Users may organise their favourite snapshots in the photo album provided within the handset, which holds a maximum of 100 pictures. In addition, the camera of the Sony Ericsson Z320i enables users to record and play footages right on the handset. The mobile phone's internal screen works as the viewfinder when the built-in camera is being used. To keep its users even more entertained, the Sony Ericsson Z320i is pre-installed with a selection of fun games in Java format.
Sony Ericsson created the Z320i with a 12-Megabyte memory for storing data and files, such as contacts, messages and photos. It offers 7 hours of talk time, and lasts for 300 hours when set on standby mode.
Users have criticised the Sony Ericsson Z320i for lack of advanced features, noting that the handset should have had its own built-in media player and Bluetooth wireless support. Others have also attested that the mobile phone tends to freeze when it is being used.
Despite its flaws, the Sony Ericsson Z320i is notable for being a simple-looking mobile phone which highlights functionalities that meet the vital needs of mobile phone users.
