Sony Ericsson K850i Review - Editor's Review

6 Sep 2008
Tipping the scale at 118 grams and looking slim at 102 x 48 x 17 millimetres, the Sony Ericsson K850i comes in black and grey casings with either velvet blue or luminous green highlights. A broad selection of polyphonic ring tones will give the Sony Ericsson K850i a fitting partner to complement its looks.

Adding to its edgy look is its large TFT screen which displays 262,000 vibrant colours with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels for better viewing of animated and picture wallpapers. As it is armed with scratch-proof protection, the Sony Ericsson K850i is fairly stress-free to maintain.

Working over quad-band technology, the Sony Ericsson K850i operates on GSMs 850, 900, 1800, as well as 1900, giving users wider coverage when travelling, depending on their network providers.

When using the Sony Ericsson K850i, users can create text and multimedia messages which work on predictive text, and supports long SMS messaging. The Sony Ericsson K850i also has a push email.

File and schedule organisation is hassle-free with the Sony Ericsson K850i. For its on-the-go owners, the Sony Ericsson K850i offers a phone book, an alarm clock, a calculator, a calendar, a stopwatch, notes and tasks, a vibrating alert and a timer. Plane travels will not hinder users from using the Sony Ericsson K850i, as its flight mode option can be selected during flights. For more convenient calls, a speakerphone has been built in the Sony Ericsson K850i.

Internet access is easy with the Sony Ericsson K850i’s built-in Web browser with support for RSS Feeds. The connectivity selections offered by Sony Ericsson K850i include wire-free Bluetooth, PC Sync and USB cable, for easy file transfers with other compatible devices. Powered by 3.5G HSDPA, the Sony Ericsson assures of an almost seamless connectivity at a speed of about 384 Kilobytes per second. Similarly, the EDGE technology integrated with the mobile phone’s system guarantees faster rates, particularly for compatible device-to-device transfers.

The powerful 3G technology of the Sony Ericsson K850i allows face-to-face video calls. Moreover, it allows users to multitask when using the handset. Essentially, the 3G technology permits users to take or make calls while downloading music, video or games files at the same time.

Coming from Sony Ericsson’s family of camera-oriented mobile phones, the K850i joins Sony Ericsson K800i and K810i in providing users top-of-the-line snapshots of cyber-shot quality.

As such, the Sony Ericsson K850i flaunts a 5-Megapixel camera with cyber-shot capability and full digital zoom. For those needed subject close-ups, the Sony Ericsson K850i’s camera can come handy with its auto focus feature. The camera also works on Xenon flash to mend those environments with deficient lighting. While it may seem normal to get blurry photos due to unwanted movements during photo shoots, the Sony Ericsson K850i helps users avoid those through its image stabiliser feature. Common red eye problems are also avoidable with the Sony Ericsson K850i, with its red-eye reduction functionality. Furthermore, photos can be tweaked to gain the desired effect in final photo outputs through the Photo Fix and BestPic features.

The Sony Ericsson K850i’s powerful camera supports beyond quality still photos. The mobile phone can also prove to be useful for video recording, playback and streaming. For movement-free and steadier video footages, the camera also comes with a Video Stabiliser system.

The sound functionalities of the Sony Ericsson K850i include a media player for listening to music and viewing videos. The integrated media player comes with a TrackID and PlayNow features for play list and music file management purposes. Additionally, an FM radio is also built in the mobile phone for users who want learn of the latest news and information, or to listen to their favourite songs on-air. Users can opt to listen in to their favourite tracks, or the video’s integrated audio through the Sony Ericsson K850i’s Bluetooth A2DP stereo feature.

To add to its entertainment features, Sony Ericsson has put onto the K850i various 3D games. It is also possible to download games in Java format using the Sony Ericsson K850i.

Data, music, photo and video files can be stored in the Sony Ericsson K850i’s 40 Megabytes of memory. To expand its storage capacity, an M2 micro stick or a microSD card can be used.

When its battery is fully charged, the Sony Ericsson K850i can last to up to 9 hours of talk time. On standby mode, the mobile phone stays on for roughly 400 hours.

Users and observers find that the Sony Ericsson K850i has lived up to its being a camera and music phone. However, some people found the keypads too small to be convenient. According to some others, the Sony Ericsson K850i’s speaker volume tends to be very low.

i have had the 5mp sony ericsson k850i blue mobile phone for about 4 weeks now having upgraded from the 3.2mp k800i. i do not think that this is a well designed mobile. the keys are ideal for children but will prove frustrating for adults to use. the k800i had a lovely antislip coating on the body while the new version is super shiney and easily scratched. the decision to change the combined rocker/navigation and push OK key to two seperate keys is badly flawed in my opinion. the k800i was a joy to use one handed but this new upgrade model is a step backwards. my first impressions were that the keys were too small for adult fingers and the 4 way navigation ring was too thin to use accurately. i also felt that the inclusion of 3 touch screen buttons was unnecessary and added several thumb movements to navigating the menus and selecting your chosen function, but being excited to have a new phone i felt that with time i would get used to it. 4 weeks later i find the key size a tremendous problem as are the touch screen buttons. sometimes one has to press them hard to get them to work while other times they are so sensitive that the slightest accidental brush with a stray finger activates one.
the convoluted menu system is a nightmare. a facility to create shortcuts does exist but is far from perfect, for example one can create a shortcut to messages but not further on to text or picture.
ive also noticed how slow the device operates when turning on the video or still camera. im still toying with the idea of going back to the k800i. this new phone is no better. for those who are thinking about trying it i'd say look at the new nokia n95 8gb instead.

I waited for months for this phone and have never been as disappointed with anything as much in my life. It is fiddly hard to use and nigh on impossible to text without reverting back to another screen. Certainly not designed for men or people who do not have dainty fingers. If you want one try it out first or you will waste your money!

OMG I love this phone. I haven't even had it a week yet and have completley fallen for it. I was a samsung girl through and through and now I have completly change. I have never been one for a decent camera as I could never be bothered to carry it around with my in my tiny bag but I love it now. Having such a good camera on my phone is amazing. I took the best quality pictures in a dark nightclub and they came out like it was day!

There is so much I could go on about with this phone but it would take far too long but to anyone thinking of purchasing this phone DO IT!!!!!!!

I got this phone free on contract and at first I was very excited about getting it, the camera looked good, the music files you can store are good, but I was dissapointed as on the advert it shows the blue line around the outside lighting up- - this does not happen, also I agree with the gent below, if ya not careful with the touch screen u can hit buttons so it has nothing to do with your fat thumbs LOL, the amount of time I connect without realising is unbelieveable. Cheers

Had the phone about ten days now - upgraded from a K800i. Before I review it I should mention I have one niggle which I will leave till the end as it is so minor; I got into Sony as opposed to Nokia via my girlfriend as I love the software. I bought this phone purely as I loved the K800 and wanted to ditch my digital camera - and I have not been disappointed - 5 megapixels and always on hand so bye bye camera. My worry was I'd lose my favourite little extra's, the 'light on for one minute' and 'record' via a quick shortcut - they don't tell you if it's still there in the promotional stuff - and lo and behold there it is. Plus you get 5 alarms instead of two... My old phone plus some. Get a 4 gigabyte memory card for £30 and you have a brilliant phone/camera/MP3 player. So I would say BUY this phone.
Finally, my only little niggle (hence my lower design rating) - the new keypad round the number thing. You will have to learn the skill of not pressing the middle touchscreen key when you select the up button. It is tricky but I got used to it... I guess it is worth it for a bigger screen but it takes practice, or maybe my thumb is to big?
