Sony Ericsson C902 Editor's Review

18 Aug 2008
The Sony Ericsson C902 is a candy bar-type, slide-out slim mobile phone measuring 108 x 49 x 10.5 millimetres and weighing approximately 107 grams. The classy mobile phone comes in sliver and black hues. Displaying a sharp resolution of 240x320 that displays more than 262,000 colours, the C902 looks sleek, feels smooth, and is packed with the features that modern users look for in a mobile phone. Its ringing tone features support polyphonic and MP3 audio formats.

Sony Ericsson's C902 has a standard navigation pad that comes in four ways, with wider keys for ease of location. Its menu icons, for the most part, are brighter, clearer and easier to follow, as compared with other mobile phones in its genre.

Music lovers appreciate the Sony Ericsson C902 for its built-in music player, which notably houses similar features with Sony Ericsson's range of walkman mobile phones. The mobile phone plays AAC and MP3 music formats. Users may also check their favourite tunes from radio stations with the radio feature of Sony Ericsson C902. The supplied compatible earphones are known for their bass responses that, as some users attest, cannot be found other handsets' kits. The earphones may be connected to the C902's jack port, measuring 3 and a half millimetres.

For connectivity purposes, the C902 is created with USB, A2DP and Bluetooth options to make wireless transfers of data and other photos to the laptop or computer a breeze. In addition, the mobile phone supports Google Maps and has the TrackID feature.

The Sony Ericsson C902 runs on HSDPA and allows Internet browsing through its HTML, WAP 2.0 and RSS browsers. Its HSDPA's maximum speed of 3.6 Megabytes per second translates to speedier downloads from the Internet, and makes Web navigation and surfing fast, easy and handy.

The Sony Ericsson C902 features IM, MMS, SMS and email messaging. The mobile phone's fun side is shown with its built-in games such as, among several others, DChoc Café Solitaire, Need For Speed ProStreet and FotoQuestFishing. It also supports other Java games that may be downloaded from the Internet.

The Sony Ericsson C902 is best known for its built-in, hidden camera that comes with a gamut of the most celebrated camera features, including Autofocus, Macro Mode, PhotoFix, BestPic and Face Detection or Recognition. The C902's rear, which is found right under the five-megapixel sensors of the camera, houses a micro mirror for self-portrait frames. The upper part of the lens has LED flash. The C902 also offers a secondary camera located at the front part, mainly for purposes of video calls in 3G.

Upon turning the mobile phone on while viewing the photo shots on screen, the Sony Ericsson C902 automatically switches itself to landscape version for a better look of the shot.

Moreover, the Sony Ericsson C902 allows video recording, video playback, video calling and video streaming. With these features, the Sony Ericsson C902 is said to be one of the better equipped camera phones in the market.

Offering about 160 Megabytes of internal micro memory, the Sony Ericsson C902 allows its users to store storing pictures, tracks or videos. Additionally, this memory capacity can be increased through the addition of a memory stick card to a slot located underneath the mobile phone's battery cover. The Sony Ericsson C902 also boasts of a battery that offers over 540 minutes talk time or worth around 400 hours of standby time.

While it gains good praises for its high-performing mobile phone capabilities, a more noticeable issue of the Sony Ericsson C902 is its tendency to become sluggish. Specifically, the built-in camera entails around 5 seconds to display its navigation icons and to fully function right after opening the camera cover.

In the same manner, the C902's screen updates are reportedly slow, particularly in the featured functions of its media player. The Sony Ericsson C902's recordings, especially those shots of fast movements, may lead to a pixelated video quality. The C902 also lacks the Email Client features, which, according to most users, would have made it a more practical mobile phone.

Otherwise, some satisfied Sony Ericsson C902 supporters say, its wealth of good design camera and other features, coupled with a user-friendly interface, make it a good buy.

The Sony Ericsson C902 video recorder has hidden features!!!
If you use the video camera in the C902, you will get the sound recorded by two internal microphones in stereo with excellent quality, but the dynamic range is a little too small to manage music recording at concerts. However, if you attach your headphones, the phone changes the settings, and the gain of the internal microphones goes down approximately 20dB. (The headset mic is never used for video recording in C902.)

This is almost enough for any loud concert. Try it! It works great.

To extract the sound track from the mp4-file to wav or mp3, you can use a variety of programs. I use Easy CD-DA.

I've had this phone for abt a month and a half. It has froze countless times while talking, while typing an sms, and while even listening to songs. It sometimes freezes for a long time and then restarts again. The issue here is about the phone freezing and restarting. There is a glitch in the "Notes" function too. It does not show the note after I edit it. So I have to hide it, and then show it, in order for it to be shown in standby after ediing it. All these have made me quite dissatisfied with the phone. Especially the freezes while my songs are playing, because I'm a music lover. The camera still holds up to it's name though. But there have been several occasions that after I take a picture without stopping my songs from playing and hide the camera, the song is unable to play. I have to then off and on my phone to resolve this.
Sony should do something useful about this freezing and restarting problem.

The Sony Ericsson C902 is abetter looking phone than the K850i. With the sliding back that covers the camrar lens and with the C902 being slimer than the k850i it wont be so bulky in your pocket. With the bigger built in memory it means you can store more things without the memory stick
