The Samsung i8510, also popularly called the Samsung i8510 INNOV8, is a 3G Smartphone sporting a sophisticated look on a shiny black casing. Operating on a sliding mechanism, the Samsung i8510 measures 17.2 x 106.5 x 53.9 millimetres with its slide closed, and weighs 140 grams.

The i8510 is part of Samsung's array of Smartphone models, which consists of the Samsung i900, the Samsung i560 and the Samsung i780. It boasts of a 71.12-millimetre TFT screen that displays picture wallpapers and screensavers in 16,000,000 colours over a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The Samsung i8510 comes with a range of ringtones in MP3 and polyphonic formats for users to select from, and give their phone a distinct personality.

The Samsung i8510 works on quadband system that covers GSM 1900, GSM 1800, GSM 900 and GSM 850 networks. It runs on Symbian 9.3 Series 60 operating system. The handset is powered by 3G HSDPA that gives it the ability to multitask and connect to the Internet at Broadband speed, while ensuring speedier data transfers. Access to the Internet using the Samsung i8510 is made possible by its built-in Web browser that provides both XHTML and HTML services.

The Samsung i8510 has a USB port for quick and easy data file transfers. The handset also supports Bluetooth with A2DP for wireless data transfers with other compatible devices. As the Samsung i8510 is powered by EDGE technology, data transfer rates are expectedly higher. It also comes with WiFi technology support for wireless connectivity via WLAN or in hotspot locations. Moreover, the handset offers an AGPS function which provides users the directions they need on selected locations.

The Samsung i8510 supports the standards mobile phone functionalities, such as SMS text messaging that works on Predictive Text and MMS multimedia messaging. Users can also chat with their contacts, as the handset supports Instant Messaging services. E-mail accounts may also be accessed using the Samsung i8510. The Samsung i8510 can help their users keep their schedules and tasks in place with its organiser features of a phonebook, an alarm clock, a calculator, a calendar and a to-do list.

A highlight in the features of the Samsung i8510 is its integrated 8-megapixel camera, which works on a dual-purpose system by capturing still pictures and moving video footages. The Samsung i8510 camera has an auto-focus feature that ensures a well-focused photo. It also has the image stabiliser that gets rid of those small movements when pictures or videos are being taken. The Samsung i8510 camera brightens up dark and dull conditions and makes quality night shot pictures with its built-in flash. Users can experiment various shots with the Samsung i8510 camera using the panorama shot option. Tweaking photos to create the intended photo and video outputs is possible using the built-in camera settings. Users may record, edit and play video footages using Samsung i8510's built-in camera. The mobile phone supports practically all video formats, including H263, H264, WMV, MP4, and DivX. The Samsung i8510 also comes with a second camera for 3G video calls.

Another entertainment facet of the Samsung i8510 is a built-in music player that supports audio, MP3, AMR, WMA, and eAAC sound formats. Users can also tune in for their favourite tracks using the FM radio feature of the Samsung i8510. The handset's radio has an RDS support that allows users to view information regarding the tracks that they are listening to. In addition, the Samsung i8510 is preloaded with Java and FIFA 2008 games, and supports downloading of other games to entertain its users.

When fully charged, the Samsung i8510 provides GSM talk time of a maximum of 8.5 hours, or roughly 310 hours when on standby. The i8510 has versions that support an internal memory of either 8 or 16 Gigabytes, which maybe expanded through a memory card. Its RAM memory is 128 Megabytes.

While some people find the Samsung i8510 as a mobile phone of fully packed features, some unsatisfied owners say that the handset is too bulky, compared with other 3G Smartphones available in the market. The Samsung i8510 also lacks dedicated control keys or buttons, some others complain. There are also complaints pointing to the inconvenience of the mobile phone's headset jack, which is located on the side edge portion of the handset.

I've had one for about a week and my observations are: 1) It is actually considerably smaller than the pictures denote (good thing) 2) Picture quality is surperb (good thing) 3) Links to home broadband easily (good thing) 4) A distinct lack of information, even the full userguide was missing from the samsung official site despite the quickstart guide pointing users towards samsungmobiles.com (but available elsewhere). Bad thing 5) Pitifully few games available and you'd think that basics such as Tetris/Pacman/space invaders would be available. (Bad thing) 6) Looks superb in black (good thing) but think it will look aweful in silver.
