Samsung G800 Review - Editor's Review

7 Sep 2008
Camera-oriented and practical, the G800 is a popular member of the reputed Samsung line-up that includes the Samsung G600 model. The Samsung G800 offers its users a solid yet cosy feel at a 134-gram weight. Measuring 18.8 x 51.1 x 101, the mobile phone is slender enough for a feature-rich handset.

Packed in a choice of silver or black metal casing, the Samsung G800 operates on a slide mechanism that exudes a sophisticated and modern look. The handset also comes with easy-to-access external keys.

The Samsung G800 has a 60.96 millimetres external screen with a 240 x 320-pixel display resolution, showcasing screensavers and wallpapers in approximately 262,000 colours. Users of the Samsung G800 can choose from a selection of ring tones and alerts in MP3 audio format, according to their personal preferences. Similarly, users can download ring tones onto the Samsung G800.

As a tri-band mobile phone, the Samsung G800 is useful to travelling users. It works on GSMs 900, 1800 and 1900, depending on the handset owner’s network provider.

File transfers are easy with the Samsung G800. Users can opt to utilize the Bluetooth wire-free A2DP that the mobile phone supports for easy connectivity with computers, headphones, printers and headsets. Similarly, users can use the built-in USB port to connect the USB cable for file transfers to devices. Owing to the Samsung G800’s GPRS and EDGE technologies, data transfers are expected to be at a speedier rate.

Users who need to go online will be able to access the Internet using the Samsung G800. The handset is equipped with an internal WAP 2.0 with support for Web RSS feeds. HTML and XHTML Internet browsing is also supported by the technologically advanced mobile phone. For an enhanced broadband quality, the Samsung G800 is 3G-enabled and runs on HSDPA technology.

The Samsung G800 offers standard communication features which include SMS or text that comes with an assisting predictive text feature. The mobile phone also has an MMS or multimedia messaging capability for hassle-free sharing of photos and videos with compatible handset models. On-device e-mailing is also allowed by the Samsung G800.

The Samsung G800 is also armed with business organiser features for scheduling and office-related purposes, including a phonebook that allows 1,000 entries, a calendar, a to-do list, a clock, a timer, an alarm, a calculator and a vibration option. A call management system and a hands-free speaker phone also characterise the Samsung G800 to keep users organised.

As a practical mobile phone, the Samsung G800 also comes with a Document Viewer for users to check out documents in their popular formats right from the handset. The mobile phone also has an integrated mobile printing capability.

The Samsung G800 offers 160-Megabytes storage facility. Users who need to store more data will find the handset’s support for MicroSD card useful, as it expands the internal memory and offers added storage capacity.

A powerful built-in camera is the Samsung G800’s pride. The handset’s 5-Megapixel camera promises quality results with its 3x optical zoom for clear close-ups. Moreover, the Samsung G800 has an auto-focus feature to aid users in achieving their desired precision of focused subjects. Where insufficient lighting and dim environments hinder excellent photo results, the Xenon flash feature guarantees quality outputs.

The Samsung G800 camera also records, plays and streams video footages aside from capturing still shots. Functionalities for photo and video setting will allow users to personalise and customise their photos and moving footages.

Situated at the back part of the handset, the integrated camera has a lens cover that protects its lens from scratches and damages, especially when unused.

The Samsung G800 also functions as a mobile music player that stores its user’s favourite tracks. It also comes with an FM radio for avid listeners of on-air music. In addition, the Samsung G800 supports on-device gaming with embedded games in Java format. Gaming fans can also download their favourite games from the Web onto the G800 handset.

Users will enjoy using the Samsung G800 for 3 hours when its battery is full. When on standby, the handset can last to up to 220 hours.

Users say that a major downside to the Samsung G800 is its camera flash that does not provide enough light. With a relatively limited storage capacity, taking too many pictures may also not be possible with the Samsung G800, even with its memory card option.
