Samsung D600 Review - Editor's Review
24 Jun 2008
Released on March 2005, the Samsung SGH-D600 is an updated version of D500. This slider phone appears to be handy and highly functional. The well designed handset comes with lustrous colours of black and silver casing which gives it a classic yet sophisticated look. It is easy to fit in most pockets as it only weighs 103g. As compared to other slider phones, D600 is in fact a bit smaller. It measures 96mm in height, 46.5mm width and has a thickness of 21mm. It comes with a smooth sliding mechanism to make it easier when pushed open.
D600 is housed with external buttons so as to provide user convenience. The menu and other features can be navigated or accessed through these external buttons. As this is a slider phone, it is obviously prone to accidental use of keys. In order to prevent that from happening, it presents an automatic lock function and provides a two-step sequence for unlocking the keys.
Inside the phone, you will see that the number pad and other keys are large enough to fit the fingers providing users with comfort. A white backlight is also added to the keypad. This is very useful in places with dark lighting.
For a mid-range phone, D600 carries a screen which simply stands out. The QVGA TFT LCD screen offers a high resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and supports 262K colour display. It shows a sharp and clear quality of images. This will give out a wonderful effect especially when a photo is used as wallpaper.
Located on the right border of the phone is a single connector for both AV cables and headphones. What’s more is that, instead of providing rubber protectors for the connector, Samsung used a sliding cover. The said rubber covers can easily get lost thus leaving the connectors prone to unnecessary breakage. To put it simply, the use of sliding covers is a clever solution to the said problem.
As mentioned earlier, D600 is a quad-band GSM mobile phone with global roaming capabilities. This feature will be handy to users who often travel because it works on a worldwide range of communication.
A built-in memory of 81MB is provided by the phone. However, if the user needs more memory space for photos and songs, he can opt for the Transflash external memory often referred to as MicroSD.
Most users are fond of music so D600 offers a built-in music player which supports MP3, MIDI and AAC formats. The sound quality is average. It provides sufficient volume and a sound that’s relatively sharp and clear even at a maximum level. The music player features an equalizer which provides choices of classic, jazz, rock, and normal setting. 3D sound technology is also applied for better audio output. In addition, the music player provides a rich visual coupled with several skin choices. As for ringtones, it supports both MP3 and 40-channel polyphonic melodies.
Users have the option to insert up to 1,000 contacts in the phonebook. Search speed for the phonebook is good even when dealing with a large number of contacts. The D600 features a PicselViewer which will enable users to view Excel, Word, and PowerPoint files especially during synchronization.
Situated on the backside of Samsung D600 is a 2 megapixel camera. The camera offers a 4 times digital zoom which can be controlled via navigation key. On the sides of the camera lens is a self-portrait mirror and a flash diode. Aside from being able to Self-shot, the camera is also capable of Multi-shot, Timer-shot and Night Mode options. Moreover, the camera is also equipped with an image editor and a 4-step setup for ISO sensitivity which is very interesting. It also provides a video recorder and video player that produce high quality clips.
Aside from the usual EDGE technology, Bluetooth and USB connectivity options, a very impressive addition to the phone is the TV output feature. The said feature is capable of connecting a mobile phone to a TV. When this feature is used, everything on the mobile phone will disappear and all of its contents can now be seen on TV. With that being said, the user may project their video clips, photos and even listen to music.
Battery life is average with 7 hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby time. Needless to say, the Samsung D600 is an impressive phone which will be very appealing to various users.

Stylish, compact yet still practical. Easy to use and not complex, in spite of this it has all the features that you would expect from Samsung. The phone is well laid out and easy to access and yet the cost equals that of many lesser quality phones on the market.
