Nokia N97 joins Nokia's array of technologically advanced mobile phones or the N-Series, which includes the Nokia N96 and the Nokia N95 among other popular handset models. Encased in a proportional exterior, this is a 3G HSDPA Smartphone that measures 15.9 x 55.3 x 117.2 millimetres and displays a TFT touch-sensitive screen which supports 16 million colours over a 360 x 640-pixel resolution. The phone weighs a solid 150 grams inclusive of its fitted battery. It comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that allows viewing of the screen in horizontal mode. It supports ringtones in MP3 and polyphonic formats.
The Nokia N97 works on the Symbian operating system, and is powered by the S60 5th edition software. Working over quadband network, the mobile phone covers GSM 1900, GSM 1800, GSM 900 and GSM 850, as well as WCDMA 900, 1900 and 2100.
Getting connected to the Internet is easy with the Nokia N97's WAP XHTML and HTML browser with RSS Feeds. On-the-go users can be online at certain hotspots, because the handset is WLAN Wi-Fi enabled. The handset also supports user-friendly connectivity for transferring of files to other compatible devices. This is done through Bluetooth or micro USB connection, which is powered by GPRS and EDGE technologies that allow high-speed transfer rates.
Typical of mobile phones, the N97 offers SMS or text and MMS or multimedia messaging services. Because the handset has the ability to connect its user to the Internet, it supports push email in SMTP, IMAP4 and POP3 servers, as well emailing with attachments. Keeping in touch with friends and family online through the instant messaging service is also possible.
The Nokia N97 comes handy and is ready to use during those picture-perfect moments with its built-in 5 Megapixel digital camera that comes with a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens. The camera also has a dual LED flash to fix those lighting problems when taking photos. Another top characteristic of the integrated camera is its autofocus feature, which allows users to take better snapshots of their subjects. Tweaking photos is also possible with the camera settings and editing tools. Because of its dedicated camera key, using the handset to capture still photos promises to be a breeze.
Besides freezing memorable times, the built-in camera of the Nokia N97 serves as a video recorder in MPEG4 and VGA modes, and allows users to stream videos in MPEG4, H264 and QCIF formats. Just as pictures can be tweaked to obtain the perfect effects, there are video settings for the needed adjustments when shooting videos. For 3G or video calling purposes, the N97 comes with a second integrated VGA camera.
The Nokia N97's entertainment features also include a music player that supports MP3, AAC, eAAC+, eAAC and WMA audio formats. It also comes with a music display to identify a track that is currently playing. The music player also allows users to create their own playlist for easier access and control of music files. Those who prefer listening to music on-air will appreciate the FM radio feature, complete with RDS for accessibility to news and information.
The N97 can also turn into a game gadget with its support for Java games, which are embedded in the handset. Downloading of games is also supported by the mobile phone.
Although a sophisticated handset, the Nokia N97 can serve as a business assistant with its organiser features, including a phonebook, a calendar, a clock and alarm, a to-do list, a calculator, a converter and a document viewer. The handset also supports conference calls, comes with a sound recorder, recognises voice commands and supports voice dialing for ultimate ease in making and taking calls. It has a built-in GPS navigation tool that offers assistance on directions in certain applicable areas. Moreover, there is support for Nokia Maps complete with compass.
The Nokia N97 has an internal memory of 32 Gigabytes, which can be expanded through a MicroSD memory card that supports a maximum added capacity of 16 Gigabytes. The power specifications are up to 6.6 hours of GSM talk time and 5.3 hours when using the 3G feature. The handset stays on standby mode for 7.1 hours on GSM, and for around 6.6 hours with its 3G capability.
Some users find the Nokia N97 rather bulky. Others also find its integrated camera to be less efficient, working only on 5 Megapixels. Nevertheless, satisfied users find the mobile phone a valuable partner with its business features, and a highly entertaining device that suits the modern handset user.
