Tagged as a slimmer 3G mobile phone, the Nokia N85 is among Nokia's models in its N Series that includes the Nokia N96, N79 and Nokia N78. The Nokia N85 works on a two-way opening slider, with a menu that houses the Navi control, and a slide-out keypad that illuminates when used. It weighs 128 grams and has the size of 103 x 50 x 16 millimetres.

A 66.04-millimetre QVGA screen that features 16.7 million colours over a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels dominates the front area of Nokia N85. For better control, users may opt to adjust the screen's brightness and light detector features. Ringtones in WMA, MP3, AAC+, AAC and polyphonic formats are supported by the mobile phone.

The Nokia N85 is a quadband handset that supports GSMs 850, 900, 1800 and 1900. It operates on Symbian version 9.3 operating system on S60. The Nokia N85 has a built-in Internet browser with the Nokia Mini Maps feature for users to experience XHTML MP, HTML, CSS and WML Web browsing. Powered by HSDPA technology, the Nokia N85 provides speedy Internet connectivity and offers multitasking skills. Users of the Nokia N85 can wirelessly connect to the Internet through its WLAN features with WiFi support. Connecting to compatible devices is also convenient with the Nokia N85's USB or Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Getting directions is easy using the built-in GPS with AGPS navigation option of the handset, which supports Nokia Maps.

Using the Nokia N85, users can send SMS or text that has the Predictive Text option, and MMS or multimedia messages to their contacts. Access to e-mail through SMTP, IMAP and POP is also allowed by the handset, with support for filtering and attachments. Calls are convenient using the Nokia N85, as it allows a conference call among six users. It also has the push-to-talk option, photo caller ID and handsfree speakers for hassle-free calls. The handset also supports VoIP calls online.

Being a business-oriented handset, the Nokia N85 features standard organiser tools, including a calendar, a phone book, a clock, a calculator, a vibrating alert and notes options. The flight mode selection of the Nokia N85 allows users to use the handset while on board a plane.

The Nokia N85 flaunts its 5-Megapixel Camera that comes with a Carl Zeiss Optics Tessar type of lens and CMOS sensor for clear and crisp photo shots. Capturing the subject is easy with the Nokia N85's 20x digital zoom, as well as auto focus and assist light options. The handset also has a LED flash to give better lighting to otherwise dark and dull environments during photo shoots. Camera settings may also be adjusted, including flash mode with red-eye reduction, white balance, colour tone, capture and scene modes.

Tweaking photos to get the best output is possible right on the Nokia N85 with the handset’s Photo Editor feature. The Nokia N85's main and front cameras with 8x and 2x can be used to record, play and stream videos in H263, H264, MPEG4 and 3GP formats. The cameras support VGA formats at 30 and 15 frames per second. A stabiliser feature may be used to ensure that the videos are taken without the unnecessary movements. Similarly, enhancing features such as video light and video modes can be utilized for better results.

Nokia has integrated an FM radio onto the N85, which comes with RDS information that provides listeners with information while tuning in to their favourite station. The Nokia N85 promises quality music listening with its 3D stereo speaker set. The handset's music player has dedicated music buttons and easily accessible volume controls, and displays an album art that shows the album of the track being listened to. The gaming facet of the Nokia N85 includes embedded Java games. The mobile phone also allows users to download other games from the Internet.

The Nokia N85 has an internal memory of 74 Megabytes that can be expanded to 8 Gigabytes using a MicroSD memory card. It offers 6.9 hours of talk time for GSM, 4.5 hours for WCDMA and 6 hours for VoIP. When on its standby mode, the Nokia N85 can last to up to 363 hours for GSM and WCDMA.

Satisfied users rate the Nokia N85 as a highly functional and sophisticated mobile phone. Others, however, find its set up and menus confusing.
