Motorola W230 Review - Editor's Review

11 Jun 2008
Motorola offers its W230 users three colours as options for its casing – licorice silver, titanium or dark grey and mandarin or vibrant orange. Its shape resembles that of a solid candy bar with matching smooth and even edges. A CSTN screen dominates the Motorola W230’s front part, measuring 40.64 millimeters and displays 65,000 vibrant colours in a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. The mobile phone also has easy–to-navigate keypads that users will find handy to use. The handset runs on dual band technology, which supports GSM networks in 1800 and 900 frequencies.

The Motorola W230 is a lightweight handset at only 80 grams, making it a convenient handheld mobile phone. It is also easy to carry and may fit into the user’s pocket or bag. The Motorola W230’s overall dimensions are a slim 110mm x 45mm by 14.7mm. The W230 adds to the Motorola W series, which also includes the Motorola W180, W220 and W375 mobile phones. Similar with these Motorola handsets, the W230 has the standard features of a phonebook that enables contact search, a built-in calendar, a calculator, an alarm clock and a stopwatch.

Performance-wise, its rechargeable lithium ion battery provides maximum standby time of 450 hours. This translates to talk time of approximately 9 hours when fully charged.

The Motorola W230 is capable of storing roughly 500 SMS messages with its internal memory. The mobile phone also allows expanding of its built-in memory to a maximum of 2 Gigabytes using a memory stick. Users of Motorola W230 can transfer their mobile phone’s files and data to a computer or other devices that are compatible with it.

The Motorola W230 balances its non-flashy appearance with user convenience. Overall, most practical users find the W230’s functionality to be relatively simple and user friendly.

Despite being relatively cheap (the model caters to mid- to low-end markets), the Motorola W230 is full-packed, nevertheless. One of Motorola W230’s highlights is its call features. The mobile phone’s audio functions are enhanced by the CrystalTalk technology. As a result, the Motorola W230 offers high sound quality during calls.

Additionally, the Motorola W230 mobile phone is most popular for its RDS-embracing radio feature. The RDS displays information coming from radio stations. Hence, while listening to favourite tracks over the Motorola W230’s built-in radio, users can also view text details provided on the CSTN screen.

Commonly, Motorola is well-known for being a music phone. In this regard, the Motorola W230 has been called the music genius or a music-centric handset. It houses a music player for easy music listening directly from the handset. Downloading of tracks is also possible with the Motorola W230. The pre-installed music player accepts all generally accepted audio formats, including MIDI, MP3, AMR and iMelody.

The mobile phone also allows users to transfer their tracks to various devices. This sharing is possible through connectivity offered by its USB connection. Users of Motorola W230 can transfer their mobile phone’s files and data to a computer or other devices that are compatible with it. Particularly, the Motorola W230 handset has a capability to synchronize with version 11 of Windows Media Player. Hence, the W230 allows the computer-to-handset transfer of audio files in common formats.

Like most Motorola mobile phones and other units in general, the Motorola W230 has built-in messaging service features. These include SMS, MMS or multimedia messaging and chat, commonly known as enhanced messaging service or EMS. Online connectivity is a breeze with the Motorola W230. Internet browsing is possible through the mobile phone’s WAP browser. This allows users to access the World Wide Web directly from the handset’s main menu.

The Motorola W230 is known for its practicality as a mobile phone, and is therefore regarded for its usability. Versatility, however, is also the W230’s asset. It has a gamut of pre-loaded games for its users’ entertainment.

While some users have found the keypads to be intuitive, ergonomic and responsive, some unsatisfied owners have complained that the Motorola W230’s buttons are not as sensitive as they should be. It also lacks a camera and a video recorder, which sets modernist phones above the rest. There are some, however, who find several of Motorola W230’s features aptly fit even though it is cheaper than most high-end phones.
