The HTC S740 is an HSDPA-supporting slider handset that tips the scale at 140 grams, and has the dimensions of 116 x 43 x 16 millimetres. Externally, the S740 resembles a few of HTC's Touch series of sleek mobile phones, such as the HTC Touch Pro and the HTC Touch Diamond. Overall, it offers enhanced technical specifications to its predecessor, the HTC S730.

The HTC S740 comes with a mirror-like façade. It is highlighted by a 60.96-millimetre QVGA screen, which displays 65,000 vibrant colours in a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. Its backside is of a prism-like design. The HTC S740 also comes with an auto-sliding QWERTY keyboard, plus a numeric keypad, both of which offer a tactile feel.

Running on Qualcomm MSM7225 on a 528MHz processor, the HTC S740 has a 1050 mAh Li-Po battery. It is a quadband handset that works on GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900 and GSM 850, as well as HSDPA 2100 and HSDPA 900. The mobile phone's wide network coverage makes it an ideal companion for frequent travelers with its worldwide roaming capabilities, which are contingent upon the network provider's services.

The HTC S740 offers Web connectivity through its WAP 2.0/xHTML Internet browser. On-the-go users will enjoy browsing through Internet sites with the handset's support for Wi-Fi technology that allows instant Web connectivity in several hotspots. For users who need to transfer files, the HTC S740 comes with a mini-USB support, as well as Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP for wireless connectivity with compatible devices such as a laptop, a printer or a computer. Because the handset runs on GPRS and EDGE systems, users are assured of faster download and data transfer rates.

The HTC S740 allows users to receive and send SMS or text and MMS or multimedia messages. The handset also supports onboard access to emails. Moreover, users can instantaneously reach their contacts through the HTC S740's support for Instant Messaging. It also comes with a built-in GPS system complete with A-GPS. This serves as users' direction guide to various locations.

Business-oriented users will find a competent assistant in the HTC S740 with its organiser features. The handset comes with an alarm clock, a calculator, a to-do list, a calendar, a vibration option and a voice memo for those important reminders and schedules. In addition, the HTC S740 allows users to view documents in Word, Excel and PDF formats. An added feature of the mobile phone is its support for hands-free calls.

Instant snapshots can be taken through the built-in 3.2-Megapixel camera of the HTC S740. The camera comes with fixed-focus lens to achieve precision in photo outputs. It also allows users to take and stream videos. The camera has a dedicated shutter button situated at the handset's right edge.

The HTC S740 is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system that offers a rotating interface. Consequently, the handset offers a more convenient initial setup and a threaded SMS. Users may also choose to install navigation software on the HTC S740, such as Google Maps or Opera Mobile browsers.

Users can enjoy the HTC S740 for 6 hours and 20 minutes of GSM talk time. It also lasts for 400 hours when set on standby mode. The HTC S740 comes with a 256-Megabyte storage capacity of RAM and 256 Megabytes of ROM. Users may opt to expand the handset's memory using a microSD memory card.

Some users find the HTC S740's keyboard too wide, with some of its buttons too tiny. Others also criticise the handset for being a fingerprint magnet. More importantly, users point out that the mobile phone does not support 3G video calling, and has an average-performing camera.
