A non-bulky and comfortable communication device to carry, the Acer DX900 Tempo weighs 147 grams with the full dimensions of 61 x 106 x 17 millimetres. It comes in the classic candy bar design and is clad in a plastic black casing that offers a rubbery finish. This mobile phone offers a wide touch-sensitive screen which measures 71 millimetres that displays images in sharp and bright 16-bit 65,536 colours on 480 x 640-pixels VGA resolution. Sitting beneath the screen is a set of shiny, silver-coloured buttons, and a huge navigation pad right in between. The handset offers an accelerometer feature that enables users to switch to either horizontal or vertical orientation for better viewing of images on the touch screen.

The start-up mobile phone kit includes a stylus as a navigation tool option. A screen protector and a stylus pouch also come as start-up accessories to keep the handset looking and functioning in top shape.

This handset is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, and is equipped with the Microsoft ActiveSync feature. It runs on 533 MHz Samsung SC3 6400 processor and is tri-band, functioning on GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900 frequencies. It enables users to share and transfer data with other compatible gadgets such as laptops, personal computers or printers through USB support. Users may also opt for the wireless Bluetooth support and avoid the hassles of entangled wires during file transfers. They may also access the Internet through an integrated Web browser with Wi-Fi support. This mobile phone also serves as direction guide for users with its integrated support for GPS application. As a 3G-enabled handset, the Acer DX900 also Tempo supports video calls.

As customary communication features, this handset supports SMS or text messaging and MMS or multimedia messaging services. It supports MS Outlook Mobile email service that allows users to access and read e-mail messages with attachments right on the handset.

Possibly the most notable feature of the Acer DX900 Tempo is its support for two SIM cards that simultaneously work in tandem. The SIM cards are stored in compartments located right beneath the fitted battery. This handset is equipped with a built-in utility called SIM manager that allows users to edit their contacts in each SIM. To give users an easy option on which SIM card to send SMS messages from, this handset comes with an uncomplicated screen that is appended to the SMS composition tool and pops up after the 'send' key is pressed. SMS messages received through both SIMs are received in the handset's SMS inbox.

The Acer DX900 Tempo also has a Windows Mobile Communication Manager tool that has been tweaked to allow users to switch between the two SIMs for outgoing calls. This mobile phone also has its own version of the Spb Mobile Shell application, which can be made to run alongside the Windows Mobile interface to provide signal-strength data for the two SIMs.

This smartphone also instantly turns into an entertainment gizmo with its set of fun features. Users who enjoy snapping photos will appreciate the 3-Megapixel camera that Acer pre-installed in this handset. The LED photo light is an image-enhancing feature of the camera that is used to improve otherwise dull environments. In addition, this mobile phone pleases music-loving users with its support for music playback that supports widely accepted music formats. It also comes with a 2.5-millimetre headphone socket and stereo headset as added accessory for a quality private listening experience.

The Acer DX900 Tempo offers users an onboard memory of 256 Megabytes of ROM and 128 Megabytes of RAM on which to store contact list, photos, videos and other data. This storage capacity may be expanded through a microSD memory card.

Critics of this mobile phone point out its unremarkable design and low internal memory. Others also contend that this handset's user interface tends to be unresponsive. Moreover, unhappy users think that the battery life is frustrating. Nevertheless, the Acer DX900 Tempo is applauded for its finger-friendly keys and icons that aid in users' smooth navigation and browsing. This mobile phone is appreciated for its capacity to operate two SIM cards at the same time, without compromising other business-oriented and entertainment-centered applications.
