Choosing a Mobile Phone

The mobile phone market has been a growing industry since the very beginning, and as mobile phone usage around the world soars, prices are falling and the technology packed into an average mobile phone handset is becoming more advanced with every passing month. The market is saturated with handsets of all shapes and sizes offering what can often seem a confusing amount of features that to the ordinary person may not mean much. As a result it can be hard to choose a mobile phone that's right for you, and once you've got one, getting the most out of all of the functions may be even more of a pain. However, with this guide we'll attempt to clear up at least some of the confusion and break the mobile phone market down into easily digestible chunks that should make choosing a mobile phone a less labour intensive task. Smart Phones
Smart phones aim to pack as much into their tiny bodies as possible, with every area covered. From mobile internet at broadband speeds, email access, cameras of up to 8 megapixels, storage space of up to 16GB and huge touch sensitive screens, a smart phone should satisfy those who love their gadgets and can get to grips with new technology quickly. The iPhone is the current king of the consumer smart phone market thanks to powerful hardware and user friendly software, though its camera lets it down. Nokia's N96 is another popular smart phone that focuses on media playback and mobile TV.

Camera Phones
Some people want to have a phone that conveniently doubles as a digital camera, and with the current generation of camera phones you'll be looking at replacing your digital camera all together. First there was the LG Viewty which still has arguably the best video capture of any handset, but with offerings like the Pixon from Samsung with its 8 Megapixel camera and the C905 from Sony Ericsson coming with 'Cybershot' branding, the competition is really tough at the top.

Music Phones
The interesting thing about the modern mobile phone is that pretty much every handset out there will be capable of music playback at some level. Most will cope with MP3s and have basic music browsers, but for those of you who want to replace their separate MP3 or MP4 player with a mobile phone then the choice is less wide. Sony Ericsson have produced a successful range of Walkman phones, identifiable by their 'W' prefix. The latest offering, the W350i, really blurs the line between portable music player and phone, aiming for style and value. Alternatively there's Nokia's new 5800 which features a touch screen and is aimed at the music market.

Ultimately, your choice of phone should come down to what you will realistically need. It's all well and good having a handset that can send emails, but if you won't use it then what's the point? A lot of people choose a phone based on its styling, and this is also an important thing to consider.
