Tight government control over the licensing of mobile phone operators has prevented competition throughout Iran. Currently, there are two operators in Iran, including the state-owned Iran Telecommunication Company (TCI) and Irancell, which is 49% owned by South Africa's MTN group.

There are a number of different languages spoken throughout Iran, which include Perisian, Luri, Gilaki and Mazandarani which make up for 58 percent of the population, and Azeri and other Turkic languages accounting for 26 percent. Other languages include Kurdish (9%), Balochi (1%) and Arabic (1%).
