About Yemen
Officially Yemen is the Republic of Yemen which was established with the merger of the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) and the Marxist-dominated People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen). Arabic is Yemenís official languages. North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. In 1967, British protectorates southern Aden became South Yemen. After 3 years, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive migration of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed.. In 1990, these two countries were formally integrated as the Republic of Yemen. Yemen is a Middle Eastern country located on the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia. Yemen has a total area of 527,970 sq km. Yemen's territory consists of over 200 islands, the largest of which is Socotra, about 415 kilometres to the south of Yemen, off the coast of Somalia. Yemen has a population of more than 20 million people. Yemen has a population growth rate 3.46%. The nationalities of the Yemen's people are 'Yemeni'. Yemen has three different religions' people i.e. large number of Muslim (Sunni and Shia), small numbers of Jewish and Hindu. Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Arab world, reported average annual growth in the range of 3-4% from 2000 through 2007. Its economic fortunes depend mostly on declining oil resources, but the country is trying to diversify its earnings. Oil revenues probably increased in 2007 as a result of higher prices.
