About Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is located in central Asia and bordering Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the east, and Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. In terms of size, Uzbekistan has a total area of 447,400 sq km. Total land area is 425,400 sq km which is slightly larger than California and water area is 22,000 sq km. The population of Uzbekistan is approximately 28,268,440. It has a population growth rate 1.753%. The people from Uzbekistan are known as Uzbekistani, their nationality. The people of this nation is 88% Muslim, 9% Eastern Orthodox and 3% other faiths. Russia conquered Uzbekistan in the late 19th century. Stiff resistance to the Red Army after World War I was eventually suppressed and a socialist republic set up in 1924. The extensive and inefficient irrigation used to support the former has been the main cause of shrinkage of the Aral Sea to less than a third of its original volume, making this one of the world's worst environmental disasters. Uzbekistan declared independence on September 1, 1991. Along with many Commonwealth of Independent States economies, Uzbekistan's economy declined during the first years of transition and then recovered after 1995, as the cumulative effect of policy reforms began to be felt. Uzbekistan is now the world's sixth-largest producer and second-largest exporter of cotton, as well as the seventh largest world producer of gold. It is also a regionally significant producer of natural gas, coal, copper, oil, silver, and uranium. According to IMF estimates, the GDP in 2008 will be almost double its value in 1995.
