About Tuvalu
Former Ellice Island is now knows as Tuvalu now. It is located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. These two languages - Samoan, Kiribati are also used by the people on the island of Nui. It has 96% of Polynesian People and rest of the 4% are Micronesian. The Spanish were the first Europeans to observe the islands in the 1500s. However, in 1819 Captain De Peyster named the main island in the group Ellice's Island. In 1841, the U.S. had explored Expedition. In 1863, hundreds of people from the southern islands were kidnapped. In the late 19th century British influence came. During World War II, several thousand American troops were in the islands. At last on 1 October 1978, they gained Independence from the UK empower. In term of economy, it is primarily based on farming, fishing, tourism, copra. Tuvalu has almost no natural resources. The Tuvalu's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 est. is approximately $20 million with GDP of $2,000 per capita. Government revenues largely come from the sale of stamps and coins, fishing licenses and worker remittances.
