Turkmenistan is the official name of this country. This Turkic country of Central Asia is located between Iran and Kazakhstan. Arabs conquered this region. In the middle of the 11th century, the powerful Turks of the Seljuk Empire came, attempted to expand it into Afghanistan. In 12th century Genghis Khan took control. By 1894 imperial Russia had taken control of Turkmenistan. October Revolution of 1917 in Russia and subsequent political unrest led to the declaration of the Turkmen Republic as one of the 15 republics of the Soviet Union in 1924. Until 1991, it was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic. Gained Independence from the Soviet Union, that was first Declared on October 27, 1991 and then finally recognized as independent in December 8, 1991. Turkmenistan ranks 5th in the world for its GDP growth rate . It is wealthy in natural resources. It is an important supplier of raw materials, especially natural gas, petrochemicals and raw cotton. One-half of its irrigated land is planted in cotton.
