About Taiwan

The Republic of China governs the island of Taiwan. About four thousand years ago, ancestors of current Taiwanese aborigines settled in Taiwan. These aborigines are genetically related to Malay and Polynesians, and linguists classify their languages as Austronesian. Polynesians are suspected to have ancestry traceable back to Taiwan. In term of economy, it is mainly based on export .China is also the island's number one destination for foreign direct investment. Strong trade performance in 2007 pushed Taiwan's GDP growth rate above 5%, and unemployment is below 4%. Taiwan's Purchasing power parity domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $695.4 billion with GDP of $30,100 per capita.
