About Sudan

The Republic of the Sudan is the official name of Sudan. It is located in Northern Africa, bordering the Red Sea, between Egypt and Eritrea In terms of size, it has a total area of 2,505,810 sq km which is slightly more than one-quarter the size of the US. It has 2.376 million sq km land area and 129,810 sq km water area. The population of Sudan is approximately 40,218,455. It has a population growth rate of 2.134%. 70% of Sudan's people belong to Sunni Muslim religion. The Official and most common language of those people is Arabic. Military regimes favouring Islamic-oriented governments have dominated national politics since independence from the UK and Egypt in 1 January 1956. Sudan was embroiled in two prolonged civil wars during most of the remainder of the 20th century. The first civil war ended in 1972 but broke out again in 1983. Peace talks gained momentum in 2002-04 with the signing of several accords. The final North/South Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), signed in January 2005, granted the southern rebels autonomy for six years. In term of economy, Sudan's economy is booming on the back of increases in oil production, high oil prices, and large inflows of foreign direct investment. It has Natural resources such as modest reserves of oil, natural gas, gold, iron ore, copper, and other industrial metals. Sudan's Purchasing power parity domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $80.71 billion with GDP of $2,200 per capita.
