About Rwanda

The Republic of Rwanda is a small landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of east-central Africa, bordered by Uganda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania. Home to approximately 10.1 million people, Rwanda supports the densest population in continental Africa, with most of the population engaged in subsistence agriculture. A verdant country of fertile and hilly terrain, the small republic bears the title "Land of a Thousand Hills". In terms of size, Rwanda has a total area of 26,338 sq km which is slightly smaller than Maryland. It has 24,948 sq km land area and 1,390 sq km water area. In 1959, three years before independence from Belgium, the majority ethnic group, the Hutus, overthrew the ruling Tutsi king. Over the next several years, thousands of Tutsis were killed, and some 150,000 driven into exile in neighboring countries. The children of these exiles later formed a rebel group, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), and began a civil war in 1990. The population of Rwanda is approximately 10,186,063. The population density of it is 343/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.779%. Most of Rwanda's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common languages of those people are Kinyarwanda, French and English. It has 84% of Hutu and 16% of Tutsi and Taw people. Rwanda is a poor rural country with about 90% of the population engaged in (mainly subsistence) agriculture. It is the most densely populated country in Africa and is landlocked with few natural resources and minimal industry. Primary foreign exchange earners are coffee and tea. Rwanda's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $11.24 billion with GDP of $1,300 per capita.
