About Romania
Romania is a country located in South-East Central Europe, North of the Balkan Peninsula, on the Lower Danube, within and outside the Carpathian arch, bordering on the Black Sea. Almost all of the Danube Delta is located within its territory. It shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south. In terms of size, Romania has a total area of 237,500 sq km which is slightly smaller than Oregon. It has 230,340 sq km land area and 7,160 sq km water area. The principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia - for centuries under the suzerainty of the Turkish Ottoman Empire - secured their autonomy in 1856; they united in 1859 and a few years later adopted the new name of Romania. The country gained recognition of its independence in 1878. It joined the Allied Powers in World War I and acquired new territories - most notably Transylvania - following the conflict. The population of Romania is approximately 22,246,862. The population density of it is 93/sq km. It has a population growth rate of -0.136%. Most of Romania's people belong to Eastern Orthodox religion. The official and most common language of those people is Romanian. It has 89.5% of Romanian people and rests are Hungarian, Roma, Ukrainian, German, Russian and Turkish people. Romania, which joined the European Union on 1 January 2007, began the transition from Communism in 1989 with a largely obsolete industrial base and a pattern of output unsuited to the country's needs. The country emerged in 2000 from a punishing three-year recession thanks to strong demand in EU export markets. Romania's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2008 estimate is approximately $264.0 billion with GDP of $12,285.07 per capita.
