About Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands. The territory is composed of an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands and keys, the largest of which are Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. In terms of size, Puerto Rico has a total area of 13,790 sq km which is slightly less than three times the size of Rhode Island. It has 8,870 sq km land area and 4,921 sq km water area. Populated for centuries by aboriginal peoples, the island was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1493 following COLUMBUS' second voyage to the Americas. In 1898, after 400 years of colonial rule that saw the indigenous population nearly exterminated and African slave labor introduced, Puerto Rico was ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish-American War. Puerto Ricans were granted US citizenship in 1917. The population of Puerto Rico is approximately 3,958,128. The population density of it is 438/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.369%. Most of Puerto Rico's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common languages of those people are Spanish and English. It has 80.5% of White and rests are black, Amerindian, Asian and mixed people. Puerto Rico has one of the most dynamic economies in the Caribbean region. A diverse industrial sector has far surpassed agriculture as the primary locus of economic activity and income. Encouraged by duty-free access to the US and by tax incentives, US firms have invested heavily in Puerto Rico since the 1950s. Puerto Rico's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $77.4 billion with GDP of $19,600 per capita.
