About Philippines

The Philippines, officially known as the Republic of the Philippines, is an archipelagic country located in Southeast Asia with Manila as its capital city. The Philippine archipelago comprises 7,107 islands in the western Pacific Ocean, sharing maritime borders with Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau, the Republic of China (Taiwan), and Vietnam. In terms of size, Philippines has a total area of 300,000 sq km which is slightly larger than Arizona. It has 298,170 sq km land area and 1,830 sq km water area. The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected president and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during World War II, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Republic of the Philippines attained its independence. The population of Philippines is approximately 92,681,453. The population density of it is 295/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.728%. Most of Philippines's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common languages of those people are Filipino and English. It has 28.1% of Tagalong and rests are Cebuano, Ilocano, Bisaya/Binisaya, Hiligaynon Ilonggo, Bikol and Waray people. The Philippine economy grew at its fastest pace in three decades with real GDP growth exceeding 7% in 2007. Higher government spending contributed to the growth, but a resilient service sector and large remittances from the millions of Filipinos who work abroad have played an increasingly important role. Philippines's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $466.632 billion with GDP of $5,365.287 per capita.
