About Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea, officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, is a country in Oceania, occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and numerous offshore islands (the western portion of the island is a part of Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua). It is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, in a region defined since the early 19th century as Melanesia. In terms of size, Papua New Guinea has a total area of 462,840 sq km which is slightly smaller than California. It has 452,860 sq km land area and 9,980 sq km water area. The eastern half of the island of New Guinea - second largest in the world - was divided between Germany (north) and the UK (south) in 1885. The latter area was transferred to Australia in 1902, which occupied the northern portion during World War I and continued to administer the combined areas until independence in 1975. The population of Papua New Guinea is approximately 5,931,769. The population density of it is 13/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.118%. Most of Papua New Guinea's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common languages of those people are English, Tok Pisin and Hiri Motu. It has Melanesian, Papuan, Negrito, Micronesian and Polynesian people. Papua New Guinea is richly endowed with natural resources, but exploitation has been hampered by rugged terrain and the high cost of developing infrastructure. Agriculture provides a subsistence livelihood for 85% of the population. Mineral deposits including copper, gold, and oil, account for nearly two-thirds of export earnings. Papua New Guinea's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $14.363 billion with GDP of $2,418 per capita.
