About Oman
Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman, is a country in southwest Asia on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders the United Arab Emirates on the northwest, Saudi Arabia on the west and Yemen on the southwest. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the south and east and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast. The country also contains Madha, an exclave enclosed by the United Arab Emirates, and Musandam, an exclave also separated by Emirati territory. In terms of size, Oman has a total area of 212,460 sq km which is slightly smaller than Kansas. The inhabitants of the area of Oman have long prospered on Indian Ocean trade. In the late 18th century, a newly established sultanate in Muscat signed the first in a series of friendship treaties with Britain. Over time, Oman's dependence on British political and military advisors increased, but it never became a British colony. Oman's moderate, independent foreign policy has sought to maintain good relations with all Middle Eastern countries. The population of Oman is approximately 3,311,640. The population density of it is 8.3/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 3.19%. Most of Oman's people belong to Ibadhi Muslim religion. The official and most common language of those people is Arabic. It has Arab, Baluchi, South Asian and African people. Oman is a middle-income economy that is heavily dependent on dwindling oil resources, but sustained high oil prices in recent years have helped build Oman's budget and trade surpluses and foreign reserves. Oman joined the World Trade Organization in November 2000 and continues to liberalize its markets. Oman's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $52.3 billion with GDP of $19,879 per capita.
