About Nicaragua
Nicaragua, officially the Republic of Nicaragua, is a representative democratic republic and the largest nation in Central America. It is also the least densely populated with a demographic similar in size to its smaller neighbours. The country is bordered by Honduras to the north and by Costa Rica to the south. The Pacific Ocean lies to the west of the country, while the Caribbean Sea lies to the east. Falling within the tropics, Nicaragua sits 11 degrees north of the Equator, in the Northern Hemisphere.
In terms of size, Nicaragua has a total area of 129,494 sq km which is slightly smaller than the state of New York. It has 120,254 sq km land area and 9,240 sq km water area.
The Pacific coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838.

Most of Nicaragua's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common language of those people is Spanish. It has 69% of Mestizo and rests are white, black and Amerindian people.
Nicaragua has widespread underemployment, one of the highest degrees of income inequality in the world, and the third lowest per capita income in the Western Hemisphere. While the country has progressed toward macroeconomic stability in the past few years, annual GDP growth has been far too low to meet the country's needs, forcing the country to rely on international economic assistance to meet fiscal and debt financing obligations. Nicaragua's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $15.839 billion with GDP of $3,200 per capita.
