About New Zealand
New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Maori named New Zealand Aotearoa, which is commonly translated into English as The Land of the Long White Cloud. The Realm of New Zealand also includes the Cook Islands and Niue, which are self-governing but in free association; Tokelau; and the Ross Dependency. In terms of size, New Zealand has a total area of 268,680 sq km which is about the size of Colorado. The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. The population of New Zealand is approximately 4,173,460. The population density of it is 15/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.971%. Most of New Zealand's people belong to Anglican religion. The official and most common languages of those people are English, Maori and NZ Sign Language. It has 69% of European and rests are Maori, Asian, Pacific Islander, other and mixed people. Over the past 20 years the government has transformed New Zealand from an agrarian economy dependent on concessionary British market access to a more industrialized, free market economy that can compete globally. This dynamic growth has boosted real incomes - but left behind many at the bottom of the ladder - and broadened and deepened the technological capabilities of the industrial sector. New Zealand's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2008 estimate is approximately $117.696 billion with GDP of $27,785 per capita.
