About New Caledonia

New Caledonia, is a "sui generis collectively" (in practice an overseas territory) of France, made up of a main island (Grande Terre), the Loyalty Islands, and several smaller islands. It is located in the region of Melanesia in the southwest Pacific. In terms of size, New Caledonia has a total area of 19,060 sq km which is about the size of Colorado. The population of New Caledonia is approximately 224,824. The population density of it is 13/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.175%. Most of New Caledonia's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common language of those people is French. It has 42.5% of Melanesian and rests are European, Wallisian, Polynesian, Indonesian and Vietnamese people. New Caledonia has about 25% of the world's known nickel resources. Only a small amount of the land is suitable for cultivation, and food accounts for about 20% of imports. In addition to nickel, substantial financial support from France - equal to more than 15% of GDP - and tourism are keys to the health of the economy. New Caledonia's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2003 estimate is approximately $3.158 billion with GDP of $15,000 per capita.
