The Netherlands Antilles, previously known as the Netherlands West Indies or Dutch Antilles/West Indies, is part of the Lesser Antilles and consists of two groups of islands in the Caribbean Sea: Curacao and Bonaire, just off the Venezuelan coast, and Sint Eustatius, Saba and Sint Maarten, located southeast of the Virgin Islands. The population of Netherlands Antilles is approximately 225,369. The population density of it is 229/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.754%. Most of Netherlands Antilles's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common languages of those people are Dutch, English and Papiamento. It has 85% of mixed black and 15% of other people. Tourism, petroleum refining, and offshore finance are the mainstays of this small economy, which is closely tied to the outside world. Although GDP has declined or grown slightly in each of the past eight years, the islands enjoy a high per capita income and a well-developed infrastructure compared with other countries in the region. Netherlands Antilles's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2003 estimate is approximately $ 2.45 billion with GDP of $ 11,400 per capita.
