About Namibia
Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in southern Africa on the Atlantic coast. It shares borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east, and South Africa to the south. It gained independence from South Africa in 1990 and its capital city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth of Nations. It is named after the Namib Desert. In terms of size, Namibia has a total area of 825,418 sq km which is slightly more than half the size of Alaska. South Africa occupied the German colony of South-West Africa during World War I and administered it as a mandate until after World War II, when it annexed the territory. In 1966 the Marxist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that was soon named Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region. The population of Namibia is approximately 2,088,669. The population density of it is 2.5/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.947%. Most of Namibia's people belong to Christian religion. The official and most common language of those people is English. It has 87% of black and rests are white and mixed people. The economy is heavily dependent on the extraction and processing of minerals for export. Mining accounts for 8% of GDP, but provides more than 50% of foreign exchange earnings. Rich alluvial diamond deposits make Namibia a primary source for gem-quality diamonds. Namibia's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $15.14 billion with GDP of $7,478 per capita.
