About Mauritania
Mauritania officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in North-West Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, by Senegal on the southwest, by Mali on the east and southeast, by Algeria on the northeast, and by the Morocco-controlled Western Sahara on the northwest. It is named after the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania. In terms of size, Mauritania has a total area of 1,030,700 sq km which is slightly larger than three times the size of New Mexico. It has 1,030,400 sq km land area and 300 sq km water area. Independent from France in 1960, Mauritania annexed the southern third of the former Spanish Sahara (now Western Sahara) in 1976, but relinquished it after three years of raids by the Polisario guerrilla front seeking independence for the territory. Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed TAYA seized power in a coup in 1984 and ruled Mauritania with a heavy hand for over two decades. A series of presidential elections that he held were widely seen as flawed. The population of is approximately 3,364,940 . The population density of it is 3.0/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.852%. Most of Mauritania 's people belong to Muslim religion. The official and most common language of those people is Arabic. Half the population still depends on agriculture and livestock for a livelihood, even though many of the nomads and subsistence farmers were forced into the cities by recurrent droughts in the 1970s and 1980s. Mauritania has extensive deposits of iron ore, which account for nearly 40% of total exports.Mauritania's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $5.947 billion with GDP of $2,000 per capita.
