About Malawi
The Republic of Malawi is in south-eastern Africa. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the north and Mozambique, which surrounds it on the east, south and west and is separated from Malawi by Lake Malawi. The origin of the name Malawi, is unclear. In terms of size, Malawi has a total area of 118,480 sq km which is slightly smaller than Pennsylvania. It has 94,080 sq km land area and 24,400 sq km water area. Established in 1891, the British protectorate of Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi in 1964. After three decades of one-party rule under President Hastings Kamuzu BANDA the country held multiparty elections in 1994, under a provisional constitution that came into full effect the following year. Current President Bingu wa MUTHARIKA, elected in May 2004 after a failed attempt by the previous president to amend the constitution to permit another term, struggled to assert his authority against his predecessor and subsequently started his own party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in 2005. The population of Malawi is approximately 13,931,831. The population density of it is 109/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.39%. Most of Malawi's people belong to Christian religion. The official and most common language of those people is English. Landlocked Malawi ranks among the world's most densely populated and least developed countries. The economy is predominately agricultural with about 85% of the population living in rural areas. Agriculture accounts for more than one-third of GDP and 90% of export revenues. Malawi's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $10.51 billion with GDP of $800 per capita.
