About Macedonia
The Republic of Macedonia often referred to as Macedonia, is a landlocked country on the Balkan Peninsula in south-eastern Europe. It is bordered by Serbia and Kosovo to the north, Albania to the west, Greece to the south, and Bulgaria to the east. In terms of size, Macedonia has a total area of 25,333 sq km which is slightly larger than Vermont. It has 24,856 sq km land area and 477 sq km water area. Macedonia gained its independence peacefully from Yugoslavia in 1991, but Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols delayed international recognition, which occurred under the provisional designation of "the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia." In 1995, Greece lifted a 20-month trade embargo and the two countries agreed to normalize relations. The population of Macedonia is approximately 2,061,315. The population density of it is 79/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.262%. Most of Macedonia's people belong to Macedonian Orthodox religion. The official and most common language of those people is Macedonian. The collapse of Yugoslavia ended transfer payments from the central government and eliminated advantages from inclusion in a de facto free trade area. Macedonia's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $17.35 billion with GDP of $8,500 per capita.
