About Macao
The Macao Special Administrative Region, commonly known as Macau or Macao. It is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east and south. In terms of size, Macao has a total area of 28.2 sq km which is less than one-sixth the size of Washington, DC. Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999. The population of Macao is approximately 460,823. The population density of it is 17,310/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.83%. Most of Macao's people belong to Buddhist and Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common languages of those people are Portuguese and Chinese. Macao's economy has enjoyed strong growth in recent years on the back of its expanding tourism and gaming sectors. Since opening up its locally-controlled casino industry to foreign competition in 2001, the territory has attracted tens of billions of dollars in foreign investment that have helped transform it into the world's largest gaming centre. Macao's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $12.5 billion with GDP of $28,400 per capita.
