About Libya
Libya, officially the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, is a country in North Africa. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Libya lies between Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west.. In terms of size, Libya has a total area of 1,759,540 sq km which is slightly larger than Alaska. The Italians supplanted the Ottoman Turks in the area around Tripoli in 1911 and did not relinquish their hold until 1943 when defeated in World War II. Libya then passed to UN administration and achieved independence in 1951. Following a 1969 military coup, Col. Muammar Abu Minyar al-QADHAFI began to espouse his own political system, the Third Universal Theory. The population of Libya is approximately 6,173,579. The population density of it is 3.2/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.216%. Most of Libya's people belong to Sunni Muslim religion. The official and most common language of those people is Arabic. It has 97% of Berber and Arab people. The Libyan economy depends primarily upon revenues from the oil sector, which contribute about 95% of export earnings, about one-quarter of GDP, and 60% of public sector wages. Substantial revenues from the energy sector coupled with a small population give Libya one of the highest per capita GDPs in Africa, but little of this income flows down to the lower orders of society. Libya's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $78.79 billion with GDP of $13,100 per capita.
