About Liberia

Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, CÙte d'Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean. Liberia has a hot equatorial climate with most rainfall arriving in summer with harsh harmattan winds in the dry season. Liberia's populated Pepper Coast is composed of mostly mangrove forests while the sparse inland is forested, later opening to a plateau of drier grasslands. In terms of size, Liberia has a total area of 111,370 sq km which is slightly larger than Tennessee. It has 96,320 sq km land area and 15,050 sq km water area. Settlement of freed slaves from the US in what is today Liberia began in 1822; by 1847, the Americo-Liberians were able to establish a republic. An August 2003 peace agreement ended the war and prompted the resignation of former president Charles TAYLOR, who faces war crimes charges in The Hague related to his involvement in Sierra Leone's civil war. The population of Liberia is approximately 3,334,587. The population density of it is 59/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 3.661%. Most of Liberia's people belong to Christian religion. The official and most common language of those people is English. It has 95% of indigenous African and rests are Americo-Liberians and Congo people. Civil war and government mismanagement destroyed much of Liberia's economy, especially the infrastructure in and around the capital, Monrovia. Many businesses fled the country, taking capital and expertise with them, but with the conclusion of fighting and the installation of a democratically-elected government in 2006, some have returned. Liberia's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $1.6 billion with GDP of $500 per capita.
