About Lesotho
Lesotho, officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a landlocked country and enclave entirely surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. Formerly Basutoland, it is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The name Lesotho roughly translates into "the land of the people who speak Sesotho". In terms of size, Lesotho has a total area of 30,355 sq km which is slightly smaller than Maryland. Basutoland was renamed the Kingdom of Lesotho upon independence from the UK in 1966. The Basuto National Party ruled for the first two decades. King MOSHOESHOE was exiled in 1990, but returned to Lesotho in 1992 and was reinstated in 1995. Constitutional government was restored in 1993 after seven years of military rule. In 1998, violent protests and a military mutiny following a contentious election prompted a brief but bloody intervention by South African and Botswanan military forces under the aegis of the Southern African Development Community. The population of Lesotho is approximately 2,128,180. The population density of it is 59/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.129%. Most of Lesotho's people belong to Christian religion. The official and most common language of those people are Southern Sotho and English. It has 99.7% of Sotho and rests are Europeans, Asians, and other people. Small, landlocked, and mountainous, Lesotho relies on remittances from miners employed in South Africa and customs duties from the Southern Africa Customs Union for the majority of government revenue. However, the government has recently strengthened its tax system to reduce dependency on customs duties. Lesotho's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $4.996 billion with GDP of $2,113 per capita.
