About Lebanon

Lebanon, officially the Republic of Lebanon or Lebanese Republic, is a country in Western Asia, on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east, and Israel to the south. It is in proximity to Cyprus through the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its sectarian diversity, Lebanon evolved in 1943 a unique political system, known as confessionalism, based on a community-based power-sharing mechanism. In terms of size, Lebanon has a total area of 10,400 sq km which is about 0.7 times the size of Connecticut. It has 10,230 sq km land area and 170 sq km water area. Following the capture of Syria from the Ottoman Empire by Anglo-French forces in 1918, France received a mandate over this territory and separated out the region of Lebanon in 1920. France granted this area independence in 1943. A lengthy civil war (1975-1990) devastated the country, but Lebanon has since made progress toward rebuilding its political institutions. Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) has extended authority over about two-thirds of the country. The population of Lebanon is approximately 3,971,941. The population density of it is 358/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.154%. Most of Lebanon's people belong to Muslim religion. The official and most common language of those people is Arabic. It has 95% of Arab and rests are Armenian and other people. The 1975-90 civil war seriously damaged Lebanon's economic infrastructure, cut national output by half, and all but ended Lebanon's position as a Middle Eastern entre pot and banking hub. In the years since, Lebanon has rebuilt much of its war-torn physical and financial infrastructure by borrowing heavily - mostly from domestic banks. Lebanon's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $41.96 billion with GDP of $9,100 per capita.
