About Latvia

Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia is a country in Northern Europe in the Baltic region. It is bordered to the north by Estonia (343 km), to the south by Lithuania (588 km), and to the east both by Belarus (141 km) and the Russian Federation (276 km). Across the Baltic Sea to the west lies Sweden. In terms of size, Latvia has a total area of 64,589 sq km which is slightly larger than West Virginia. The name "Latvia" originates from the ancient Latgalians, one of four eastern Baltic tribes that formed the ethnic core of the Latvian people (ca. 8th-12th centuries A.D.). The region subsequently came under the control of Germans, Poles, Swedes, and finally, Russians. Latvia reestablished its independence in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. The population of Latvia is approximately 2,245,423. The population density of it is 36/sq km. It has a population growth rate of -0.629%. Most of Latvia's people belong to Buddhist religion. The official and most common language of those people is Latvian. It has 55% of Lao and rests are Khmu and Hmong people. Latvia's economy experienced GDP growth of more than 10% per year during 2006-07. The majority of companies, banks, and real estate have been privatized, although the state still holds sizable stakes in a few large enterprises. Latvia officially joined the World Trade Organization in February 1999. EU membership, a top foreign policy goal, came in May 2004. Latvia's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $27,301 billion with GDP of $11,958 per capita.
