About Kenya
The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, and Sudan to the northwest, with the Indian Ocean running along the southeast border. In terms of size, Kenya has a total area of 582,650 sq km which is ranked slightly more than twice the size of Nevada. It has 569,250 sq km land area and 13,400 sq km water area. Founding president and liberation struggle icon Jomo Kenyatta led Kenya from independence in 1963 until his death in 1978, when President Daniel Toroitich arap MOI took power in a constitutional succession. The country was a de facto one-party state from 1969 until 1982 when the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) made itself the sole legal party in Kenya. The population of Kenya is approximately 37,953,838. The population density of it is 59/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.758%. Most of Kenya's people belong to Protestant religion. The official and most common language of those people are Swahili and English. It has many ethnic groups like Kikuyu, Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin, Kamba, Kisii, Meru, other African and non-African people. The regional hub for trade and finance in East Africa, Kenya has been hampered by corruption and by reliance upon several primary goods whose prices have remained low. In 1997, the IMF suspended Kenya's Enhanced Structural Adjustment Program due to the government's failure to maintain reforms and curb corruption. Kenya's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $48.33 billion with GDP of $1,445 per capita.
