About Jordan
Jordan, officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is a country in the Arab World in Southwest Asia, bordered by Syria to the north, Iraq to the north-east, Israel and the West Bank to the west, and Saudi Arabia to the east and south. It shares the coastlines of the Dead Sea, and the Gulf of Aqaba with Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. In terms of size, Jordan has a total area of 92,300 sq km which is slightly smaller than Indiana. It has 91,971 sq km land area and 329 sq km water area. Britain separated out a semi-autonomous region of Transjordan from Palestine in the early 1920s, and the area gained its independence in 1946; it adopted the name of Jordan in 1950. Jordan acceded to the World Trade Organization in 2000, and began to participate in the European Free Trade Association in 2001. Municipal elections were held in July 2007 under a system in which 20% of seats in all municipal councils were reserved by quota for women. The population of Jordan is approximately 6,198,677. The population density of it is 64/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.338%. Most of Jordan's people belong to Sunni Muslim religion. Official and most common language of those people is Arabic. It has 98% of Arab and rest are Circassia and Armenian people. Jordan is a small Arab country with insufficient supplies of water, oil, and other natural resources. Poverty, unemployment, and inflation are fundamental problems, but King ABDALLAH II, since assuming the throne in 1999, has undertaken some broad economic reforms in a long-term effort to improve living standards. Jordan's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $27.96 billion with GDP of $4,900 per capita.
